In a confined space ie bedroom the range with camera & flash in line & both pointing forward is about 10ft. Outside with the camera pointing at the front of the flash the range is about 30ft (tested at 19:25 with a fairly clear sky )

Depends what you mean by any good. It is quite a powerful flash and it works wirelessly on the K5. The only drawback is, it is manual only on the K5 ( TTL ). It was ideal for this event as the distance between flash and subject was constant give or take a foot or two LINK

You don't. Set camera to manual and flash synch to HS. There are probably other ways, but I use manual for flash exposures.
