For me, I like the negative space, it suits her pose, and the lack of a smile isn't an issue in the mono shots.

Following hot on the heels of Lennybloke and Lubbyman here are some of my efforts with my 135mm and tubes, I have always liked the look of these types of shots, they lack the clinical sharpness of flashed macro, but gain a delicateness with the light and shallow dof.

I dont do portraits so usually shy away from passing comments as what would I know,
But.
I think the first 2 are fantastic, the model. Pose and lighting are brilliant, seriously cracking images.
2nd 2 are good but not in the same league for me.
Theres a couple of bright spots that are a little distracting and is the colour balance or temp accurate, it just looks a tad off, to me.

I am in no way the best person to try and critique portraits. But you did ask, take my thoughts with a pinch of salt.
Honestly the first 2 are top notch

No bloody chance, wouldn't fancy trying to get a dandelion at that time, let alone a pollen beetles eyes.

Thanks folks. The experiment with tubes seems to be working.

yellow is an absolute sod to get right
Very true. If the subject is yellow, I always reduce the camera's exposure by 0.5 - 1EV then adjust until the result is what I want. It seems to help. This was -0.7EV. Being in shadow also helped, no bright highlights to deal with.

derek897 - Today's macro challenge is the eyes of a pollen beetle. Way beyond me, but for someone of your macro capabilities ...

Steve
Ah the Joy's of holding yellows, and for me I can struggle with some reds. , I have some 135mm plus tubes I might add. I love the natural lighting and creamy oof areas.

Just for you Steve on a dandelion
