DrOrloff's pics are astoundingly good and not just because of the lens! Nevertheless I have this lens and the DFA 100mm Macro WR and there is something that I like slightly more with the Tamron, although it's a bit of a je ne sais quoi! I really should sell one to pay for the next thing and I would but the versatility of the AF for non-macro........

I suppose the bottom line is that if the K5 II holds its price then the K30 will but if the former starts being cut the K30 will have to drop to maintain the differential. Nothing new about that though really.

I upgraded to the K-r from the K-x as it was forced upon me after breaking my K-x. I think it is better but not by that much to upgrade if it would have cost more than a £100 to do so. There was no K-30 then and the K5 was much more expensive. If I were you I wouldn't go for the K-r but the K30 body only or the same with the K5 if you can get a good price. I think upgrade to the K-r will be about a £100 net for small benefits and about £350 net for the K-30 body. So £250 more to get real benefits. If you don't think that's worth spending you probably don't need to upgrade anyway. I don't really know what the price/feature benefits of the 3200 would be.

Well I've read enough and seen enough to think it must be fun to try all these different combos. With a few more Tesco vouchers I reckon the Q will be under £200 at Jessops and with a cheap adapter, worth the risk with my limited funds!

Perhaps it could serve a purpose looking at these:

I bought a Q (but no Q lenses !) specifically for this purpose. I'm afraid as a birder it just doesn't work as the camera shake induced blur when hand-held just destroys the image. I tested it with a Zeiss 85/1.4 and the Tamron 90/2.8 to give 467.5 / 495mm, amongst other lenses. Didn't even bother to try it on the DA*300mm (2,650mm) !

Well since I said hand-held and that was taken on a tripod .....

It can be done, imtheguy just posted a stunning shot with the Q & 500mm on the other site - but it's just not worth the effort. As he said - you need a bird that stands still for 10 secs (LOL) so a LOT of patience is required as the failure rate is sky high !!
----------------------------------
So was that more effort or less effort than a digiscoped image and how would it have compared?
What I have managed to glean, despite the scepticism, is that the Nikon 1 system cameras (albeit with a larger sensor and only 2.7 X crop)are producing excellent results with a 300mm lens and are apparently totally versatile, hand held and extremely fast focus. Perhaps that's the option for the ultra telephoto, lightweight on a budget.

I must admit I think I could get that from 10m with my 150-500mm Sigma with cropping or possibly a superzoom bridge camera..
Possessing e.g. a 135-400, a 50-500, several 300/2.8 etc., I rather would disagree ...

You may be right and I hope you are because that would be good news! Perhaps you could take a shot of an object (preferably a medium sized bird)at about 50 metres with the Q and 300 DA* and then repeat the shot with your DSLR and the same lens. Then produce the best image with pp of the same size from each and compare.I apologise in that I'm not asking you to go out and do that, rather just musing that the results from that would be most fascinating

Thank you froeschle. I was hoping it was more. I must admit I think I could get that from 10m with my 150-500mm Sigma with cropping or possibly a superzoom bridge camera..

That looks pretty good to me, in the context of this application, at least. Do you have any more details, e.g. Distance involved etc. Sorry, but what is RDS short for? Is it remote shutter release? Thanks.
