When to Upgrade K-X ?

Sticking to Pentax DSLRs, as you might expect on Pentax User, there's no need as such to upgrade a K-x, unless you feel there is some feature that is now available that would be useful to you. This is quite different to fancying something new, which we all suffer from, from time to time.
The K-x is still capable of producing fine images. Plenty of people still use the K10D or K20D or even older Pentax DSLRs.
Possibly new lenses might be more useful, possibly you just want a new DSLR. If the latter, probably the best you could go for would be a K-5 as it dosappears from the market. Low price, superb quality and adding weather resistance, more MP, and many other features.

thanks John
I suppose I fancy something new - I have been very happy with my k-x apart from some focus issues which might be user error..

I was in a similar position last month - I fancied upgrading from Km but no real need as it performed very well indeed. Or so I thought anyway. SRS Microsystems had ex demo K5 for sale on ebay, though I phoned direct for even better deal, (thanks Chris you were brilliant!!). Shutter actuations really very low - I bought one with only 55 clicks on it for £600.
Absolutely blown away with K5 it is amazing!. Obviously still got a lot to learn but it just does so much more so much better. It even feels "right" in my hands, If I'd known I would have spent a lot more a lot earlier.
My advice if you can afford it go for it.

thanks - tbh a K5 is way out of my reach - was thinking either k-r or d3200 (not popular on a pentax forum i know)

I upgraded to the K-r from the K-x as it was forced upon me after breaking my K-x. I think it is better but not by that much to upgrade if it would have cost more than a £100 to do so. There was no K-30 then and the K5 was much more expensive. If I were you I wouldn't go for the K-r but the K30 body only or the same with the K5 if you can get a good price. I think upgrade to the K-r will be about a £100 net for small benefits and about £350 net for the K-30 body. So £250 more to get real benefits. If you don't think that's worth spending you probably don't need to upgrade anyway. I don't really know what the price/feature benefits of the 3200 would be.

IMHO your making a mistake to upgrade to the Kr. As there isnt really that much differential to the K-x. 3200 would be a backward step for me. If you must upfrade, wait until you can afford the K5 which is reducing in price or the K30.

Hello
I have the K-X and with constant string of new announcements often find myself tempted by the latest models, I always ask myself what do I want my camera to do that It cannot do and then do the latest cameras offer that. At moment all I personally find myself wanting is a quitter shutter and 100% viewfinder others may want other things.
I don’t think there has been huge increase in image quality since the K-X came out.
Personally I think new lenses are more rewarding.
Out of curiosity what focusing issues do you have?

A used K5 (body only) will cost you around £500...
I was thinking a K5 would be out of reach to me as well... I just sort of made it happen... Over the last 2 weeks...

Saying that... As you say you're not tied in... If you're looking to upgrade perhaps you should think glass not camera??
A new lens kinda changes the game...

I also would not recommend upgrading the K-x to the K-r. In performance terms they will be almost the same, maybe the K-r is marginally better in low light, but this will be negligible as the sensor in the K-x is already excellent in this regard.
I noted your reference to 'focus issues' with the K-x. I too have had issues with my first one, although the second one I bought has not been a problem. Manufacturing tolerances are not that tight and also the AF system on the K-x has a wider potential for error than say the K-5. Did you know you can download a menu hack to access the hidden K-x 'Debug Menu'? With this you can adjust the AF for forward or backwards focussing and this can make a massive difference. See link below:

The K-x is a brilliant camera and I would only consider upgrading to a K-5, or K-30 at the very least.

David

With regards to focus - I noticed on a recent holiday that I have taken quite a lot of out of focus shots.
As i said could be user error and I will try being more careful and taking my time when taking pics.
stub - interested to know why you thing a newer model d3200 would be a backward step...

I'm not Nikon bashing but the noise levels on the Sony 24mp are well documented as pretty poor - check out the results for cameras using this apsc unit. stub - interested to know why you thing a newer model d3200 would be a backward step...
Also no focus motor in the body, lower fps than the kr - with these combined I would personally not consider it but don't take my word for it check out the reviews
Check out the specs side by side and then look at the photo results of the 24mp apsc sensor and unless you need only to use the sensor at lower sensitivities that alone could be viewed as a step backward.
Incidentally I have k5 and a k10 and still enjoy using the k10 as well
Whatever you buy get out and use/enjoy it
Cheers

If you still have them it may be worth posting some of your out of focus photos and letting us know what focus mode you used ie center spot, auto 5 or 11. If its user error we may be able to offer advise on how to resolve it.

Difficult question with no right or wrong answer I know...
But - when do you think its time to upgrade a DSLR - and in particular a K-X which is 2 years old ?
How quickly does technology move on these days ? I'm just wondering whether the k-r would be an improvement or even another make - D3200 for eg as I am not tied into Pentax (although I've enjoyed my k-x)
thanks
