Thanks everyone as ever for your valued opinions. As part of my overall rationalisation I am thinking of replacing the 18-55 with the 18-250. I don't do a lot of walk around stuff but when I do I would still like to cover longer focal lengths even at the expense of quality. I have the long lengths covered well elsewhere for my wildlife photography.

How does the 18-55mm DAL lens compare with the 18-250mm lens in the 18-55 range in terms of AF speed, sharpness and IQ?

Great review and reviewer and not just because its my Favourite New Camera EVER! too.

When I was in Jessops the other day picking up my Pentax PL100 filter for it, I told the assistant I was surprised they stocked it and asked him if they had sold many. He told me that despite the IQ and the build quality it didn't seem to be what 'our sort of customers want' and they had ony sold one. Maybe not surprising when there are none on display.
That'll be the sort of customers that Jessops assistants prefer to deal with. The ones that know nothing about cameras and photography so they can tell them what they like!

A good point David but as a hoarder I am suffering from that! I just like having things But, as you may have noticed I've been going a bit mad with Q's, 300DA*'s and now a K30!! They have to be funded and although not worth much in themselves (although the Chinon is doing fairly well atm :wink a few things do add up. Now do I keep the 150- 500 Sigma? It is occuring to me that great though the 300 is it does lack that versatility if something Jay sized comes very close!

It makes the Pentax pricing strategy complex doesn't it. The K5 was selling quite well but not the K30. The difference between the two cameras is not massive overall for most people but they could justify the slightly higher cost for the K5. Now there will be such a big price gap it will surely affect the sales of the K5II while the sales of the K30 look like going through the roof!

Apart from the sealing is the k30 much of a step up to the Kr ?.

I'd say yes...
AF is improved... Better IQ... Increase in resolution... Dual control wheels... RAW/FX (customizable) button... And Weather Resistant (I know you said 'apart from' but it is a biggie imo)
Shake Reduction (SR) on the K-30 is also better than the K-5
or any other Pentax

Is it? That's good, not heard or read that one.

I can't get too wound up about this. To me everything is ok as long as there is no deliberate attempt at deception outside of the picture itself. By this I mean it can be as purple as one likes, as long as there is no written or verbal or implied statement to say that's how it was when I took it. This would include entry into a competition where something wasn't allowed but had taken place. I do all my PP to my own satisfaction then if someone offers me an alternative I will take it if I think it is an improvement, ignore it if I don't.

Nice ones and a darn good spot too,
Thanks but no credit for the spotting. Every birder in Essex has seen it as it is at an Essex Wildlife Trust reserve car park!
