I frequently suffer from buyer's remorse. On receiving a new camera the first thing I do is test it - usually in far from optimal conditions - to look for reasons to kick myself over the purchase. My feeling is that the images here probably lack a bit of punch and sharpness because it's a drab day with low light levels, and pictures taken side by side with the Kr would not look much different. There may also be a few in-camera tweaks which need to be made in the first few weeks of getting to know a camera - NR, image settings etc.

Perhaps this is nearest the truth plus a bit of handshake with the excitement of having a K30.
Anyway I've put in the hard miles tonight with some proper testing and my initial feeling is that things are ok.
Initially I got some better hand held shots indoor with the flash. I thought that was because I had turned all NR off from "auto". Later testing proved it made little difference anyway. So I did the testing with the DFA 100mm Maacro WR and the 300mm DA* which was close to min focusing distance. I stuck a test sheet on the wall and mounted the camera on the tripod, used 160 ISO, bounce flash to start. All shot in raw with the 2 sec timer, autofocused but switched across to manual before releasing shutter to prevent any minor focus readjustments. Used f4.5 for the 300mm and a range of apertures with the 100mm.
All results seemed good. I then tried some shots with the 300mm at 2000 ISO in raw with and without ISO NR. I couldn't really see any difference and nor could I when I repeated it in JPG. I then checked the SR by taking with and without handheld shots at 1/15th sec with the 100mm. Again a clear improvement with SR. Did a small sharpen after resizing to get back to raw. My main observation is that it is possible that the K-r does a bit more to the raw files than the K-30 because I noticed a bigger improvement with basic auto processing for contrast, sharpening etc.
Now back to the real world and hopefully some light to see what happens!
Obviously I can't put the 50 odd pics on here but out of embarrassment and respect for attempts to put my mind at rest I'll put a few on.

You could all be right in various ways! Check back later when I have done some more scientific testing tonight. I would add though, as David has kindly alluded to, I am aware of expectations and limitations with a good deal of experience of the type of shots I have tried in these conditions. I've not posted the indoor flash ones with the DFA 100mm macro but they should be very crisp with the flash at f8 and they weren't!

Thanks, John, David and Geordie. I tried a +5 and a -5 with the 100mm last night and it made no difference. Also the flash should have taken away the movement factor. I will take your advice John on some more controlled tests this evening but if you look in my gallery you will see I don't tend to get problems hand held at 1/250th with SR and this was supported on a bean bag. The wind vain support wasn't moving. I have already done the firmware upgrade as soon as I got it. Maybe it's just those initial nerves when you get something new but I remain to be convinced. Fingers crossed and in the words of the recently deceased Clive Dunn - don't panic Mr. Mannering.

............ and this one is just a 28% crop with the Sigma at 270mm, f6.3.
I use this shot a lot for testing and the edges are usually razor sharp. It is giving the green light and focus bleep and there's not much to confuse it here either.Comment Image

Well I've had a few days to play now and I'm a bit disappointed. I'm struggling to get sharp shots with the 300 DA*, DFA 100 macro and the Sigma 150-500. I'm worried whether I am being paranoid but I got much sharper shots with my K-r and 55-300 DAL. I know the lenses were ok on my K-r. Now I haven't had any brilliant light but even indoor shots with the flash and the DFA 100 were soft. I wonder if there is a focusing issue. Attached is my best effort so far:- DA*300, f4.5, 1/200,Iso 400 supported on window ledge. This is raw at 50% crop converted to JPEG, no other pp. OK the light wasn't great but all the shots seem to lack "punch" so far.

Is this now the same as other Pentax DSLR's in terms of compatibility. If I see a wireless remote (not IR) with the receiver which plugs in the socket which is compatible with e.g. K7, K20D will it work ok with the K-30?

Shutter - a bit, but not much quieter than the K-r.
