So, long sighted? In that case, a traditional DSLR design seems the best option perhaps? Then the Dioptre adjustment can take care of the problem.
I recall my Dad used to have terrible problems with his cameras and glasses, all types unfortunately.
As for compacts, it's reading glasses or nothing with a back screen. I take the point, but so few cameras have a direct vision viewfinder and those that do have a very high price tag.
Yes, that's right John! I wonder if one day it will be technically possible to focus (well defocus I suppose) the LCD screen.

I can give you a view from someone who hasn't upgraded.
I've been torn between either
a) getting another K5
b) getting a K30 for focus peaking
c) getting a K5II variant
d) sitting on my hands and waiting for whats next.
Stuck with d) at the moment. I'd have gone for a K5II (probably the s version), if they'd pushed the boat out and included focus peaking. As they didn't I'll wait and see what the next model offers. I can always buy one of the above if the next one doesn't meet my hopes.
Exactly the same thoughts as d). here Alan. Except I'm with K30 but have thought of K5 body for quieter shutter. As you are a wildlife man like myself I think you may find the K30 shutter quite "clonky". I use the focus peaking more on the Q than the K30.

For Pentax, 'entry level' seems to mean that you do not get a wired remote socket or two dials and the top lcd panel. There are other bits too,

I used to hate the viewfinders in "compact" 35mm cameras, so it beats me why anyone would want one.
We didn't hanker after a viewfinder with a Rollei TLR, which had a screen that you viewed at waist level. The new electronic screens are brighter and better than the Rollei.
Could this be because you are a glasses wearer John? A lot of ageing folk like myself have good middle to long distance vision but have to wear reading glasses. There is no dioptre adjustment on an LCD screen (yet, as far as I can make out) and constantly taking glasses on and off is a complete nightmare!
