Hi!

My name is Chris and I'm from London (west). I've just joined the forum because today I bought not only my first Pentax camera, but my first ever dslr - the K-5 + DA 16-50 F2.8 lens. I've only ever owned a point a shoot before so look forward to the learning curve that lies ahead - eek!
The guy at the shop recommended the lens for the kind of thing I said I was interested in photographing and also as a very good everyday lens. He also suggested the next lens to add should be a Sigma professional (70 - 200???) costing around £700 which I have already forgotten the model number of lol.
No doubt will be coming on lots for advice etc. Please be gentle with me.
Kind regards.

Chris

Chris, I am already jealous of your gear! What a camera to own for your first DSLR! Please upload some of your pics to the User Gallery once you've had a play. Far be it for me to presume as a mere beginner, but you may also want to consider the Pentax DA or DAL 55-300mm (optically both the same) as this is a stonking lens and far better VFM. Autofocus may a bit pedestrian, but image quality is fantastic.

Thanks for the welcome chaps.
I think this is the lens he was talking about - any feedback?
Where do I start to look for second hand lenses. Is the bay of thieves a good place?

Hi Chris, I was in the same boat in Nov last year, upgrading from a Lumix point and shoot to a K5.

It is bloody marvellous! The lens you have will produce very nice results all told.

I have the DA* 50-135 and it is very good indeed- it would make an ideal companion for your DA*16-50.

I am still on the nursery slopes of that learning curev you speak of. Post some images and get some very constuctive feedback if you ask for it.

I enjiy entering the weekly competition on here- its not for everyone but I find it helps me focus on one idea a week, the feedback from the judges is very detailed and helpful.

Welcome!

Hello all,
Thanks for the encouragement. So far I have managed to charge up the battery and pick up the manual. Need to start reading it now. I'm so lost lol.
@japers, I think the lens that the chap mentioned to me is the Sigma 50-150 which is considerably cheaper than the pentax 50 - 135 and of similar quality (what he said - honest).
IOnce I have got to grips with the camera a little, I may opt to buy something with slightly better zoom, but that is all some time away for now.
Cheers
Chris

Incidently, I have my options set to notify me of any replies, but I am not getting these? What am I doing wrong?

Same camera and same lens?
Seems our research must have been much the same.
I went somewhat against a couple of friends advice - they are both Nikon fans. But to be fair, I had a shortlist of the K5, Nikon D7000 and Canon 7D and was told to handle them all and chose the one that felt the best. The Pentax won hands down.
Just ordered my UV filters to protect the lens.
Happy snapping.
