Always the rear button for me, I find it far more flexible and less prone to focus errors when re-composing. The only downside is that I get confused when switching between K-5 and K-x as the buttons are in different places! I can live with that though.

All are superb but the Dragonfly is my favourite.

On my 16-45, I use a circular polariser bought off ebay from china brand new for £3.42 and it is excellent! There is absolutely no colour cast and it it does not introduce any softness. It's made of glass and is better than the Hoya circular polariser I bought for one of my other lenses that cost ten times as much. The supplier is Filter Plaza. For £3.42 it was no risk at all and it has proved to be one of my best buys.

I think the reason for the 'softness' is possibly that you are using the wrong lens for the job. The 18-250 is not cut out for this type of work and is more of a general walkabout lens. You need a macro lens for this type of work. Maybe you could post some more general shots taken with this combination?

I think this post's gone a little 'off topic' We've had some interesting comments so far and a valiant attempt by Andrew A to get it back 'on topic' - let's have some more suggestions about what you're going to do when the weather improves

Best wishes

Thanks for that Shaun, very informative. It's uncanny but he has his camera set up almost exactly the same as I do!

When I'm trying to encourage my wife to get involved and take some pictures:

"I'm useless at that, I can't do it"

Needless to say the camera I have kept for the missus will now be sold

According to our much loved Met. Office, the weather is about to dramatically improve over the next few weeks as that bloody jetstream moves north and we finally get some sunshine!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

With this in mind, I'm interested to know how all the PU members are going to take advantage of this 'window of opportunity'?

Best wishes
