As a learner I downloaded your first two photo's and cropped them. To me they do look "better" but would only post them here (at the risk of being torpedoed ) with your permission.
You have my permission Stan!

Interestingly, I don't see that much evidence that a wide aperture approach has been used. I haven't tried to check the EXIF data, just used my eyes, but the effect and strength in these I think comes from the composition, not from an aperture setting.
Hi John, I was basing the observation on certain images, not the whole bunch. I know from previous posts that Smeggy is fond of using his lenses 'wide open' and I think that is evident in some of the pictures in this series. Smeggy, can you confirm or deny?

Very interesting images Stuey, I have a bit of an interest in canals, only because what was a lock on the Chesterfield Canal is in our back garden, but is sadly now dry.

I've never seen the boat lift, it looks like a good place to visit.

I like your images, number 4 is may favourite.

David

These are really good, I love the 'wide aperture' approach. I bet the lady in #5 was pleased you managed to capture her wrinkles so vividly!

Incidentally, I haven't met your mate, Puma, but from what I have seen he appears to be a very nice chap. I am therefore sure that you are too, when not waging war on the internet.

I also think your photography has improved considerably, and my comments on your two pictures were entirely sincere.

Cheers

G
Maybe it's time we stopped this George. You are right about Shaun, (Puma); he is a very nice chap but he is also one of our valuable members who has taken his fair share of flak and has often considered leaving the site because of it. There are many members on here who have met me and who I would count as friends and I'm not in the habit of falling out with people or waging war in any way. I do defend myself though and maybe some of my words have not been as considered as they could have been.

Thank you for your observation on my improvement, it's nice to know I'm not going backwards.

I also think you made a fair point about the lack of images I post on the 'My Photos' section. The truth is I don't belong to any image hosting websites and this is the simple reason my images appear on the Gallery and not very often on the Forum. There's nothing more to it than that. I know it's easy to join a photo hosting site, but I haven't done so yet.

Best wishes
David

Hello Jack (I'm desperately resisting the temptation to say 'Hi Jack'), I hope you like the site. You will find a warm welcome on here, I look forward to seeing some of your images.

My suspicion is that your real reason for posting in the Gallery is a hunger for the often uncritical praise that you can count on from the Gallery regulars
George, I am not going to be drawn into your grubby little world of personal insults. I have asked you once before (privately) to refrain from this idiocy but you seem unable to do so.

You have no idea of why I post on the Gallery and why I don't often post images in the Forum, so please don't indulge in pointless inaccurate speculation. Some of the members on here do actually know me personally and I would imagine they are currently howling with laughter at your feeble attempts at character assasination.

Thank you for your almost warm comments on two of my images.

Regards
David
If I recall correctly, David, the insults started in a PM you sent to me a while ago, in which you criticised my pictures, and implored me not to comment on yours.

You have explained why you posted in the Gallery, but I am afraid I didn't find your explanation very convincing.

Now, I am quite happy to discontinue this dialogue, and I hope you have a pleasant evening!

G
Hello again George

I too am quite happy to discontinue the dialogue, the only problem with this is that you keep resurrecting it! This time it's via a post on the 'Tired, Hackneyed and Cliched' forum topic. I don't have any problem with you airing your opinions on any topic, but what I do object to is the personal nature of what you have posted about me. The PM I sent you is what is hinted at in the initials; it is a 'Private Message', not a public airing. As you well know it was prompted by you and your incessant personal jibes.

I am a little surprised the moderators don't remove you from the site, but I'm not going to ask for this as you do make me smile, as I'm sure you make others smile too. I know that some prominent members have taken long sabbaticals from the site because of issues with forum posts the like of which you are famous for, but this will not be the result with me. I will continue to post my pictures (probably more so now you have encouraged me) and I will continue to respect the comments that the members with common sense make upon them, including those from Somerset.

I hope you have a pleasant evening.

Best wishes
David

Well said Dr. O & Tim, common sense prevails.

Given that there are gadzillions of photos already taken there is probably not much left that isn't a cliche.

If I want to go and photograph oft photographed things then the fact that my photos will be similar to many others before me isn't going to put me off as they will still be my photographs. Furthermore you can still take a better photograph of the same thing than everyone else. The fact that I haven't yet just means I can keep trying.

We all take pictures for different reasons. Whether we take cliched pictures or not, whether we enter them into competitions or not, does it matter one hoot as long as we all enjoy what we do?

And sharing our images with like-minded photographers on places like here is a bonus
Also, as Puma says we should all respect the right for anyone to take photos of whatever they please, regardless of whether the subject has been photographed a million times before or not. How can images of the Lakes be described as 'hackneyed' just because the sun is out, or there are hills and water in them?

David
