Unfortunately we don't live in a perfect world and calibrating a zoom is at best a compromise. I always aim for an 'average' focal length and get it right for that.

On the converter front every one seems to rate the Pentax 1.4X, so much so that I've just ordered one. But you would need to see if it's compatible with your Tamron 18-250. Again I've seen people saying it does not always work well with zoom lenses.
Barrie, I've tested the Pentax 1.4 TC today with the Siggy 150-500 and the Pentax 55-300. It focusses with both of them, it can hunt a little with the Siggy, but if you manually get it close, the AF seems pretty reliable. It slows down the 55-300 a bit, but not too bad. As for image quality? With the 55-300 forget it, it is so poor as to not be worth the effort. With the Siggy it's acceptable, but certainly no better than cropping. However, pair it with the DA*300 (for which I'm sure it was designed) and it is stunning.

The thing about that one, apparently, is that AF lenses will still AF with it, as well as letting the auto-exposure information pass through as well.
The other thing about that one is that it's too short to be useful on anything other than a macro lens. Also, AF is all but useless for macro photography. I would go instead for a full set of tubes with the aperture contacts, but no AF. There's a couple of Vivitar sets on ebay at the moment.

PM sent about Siggy 150-500, which would make an excellent safari lens. My experience of the 150-500 has been much better than with the 50-500, not sure if this is just down to my copies of the lenses, but I've found the 150-500 to be much sharper.

Great set Barrie, #4 is really superb! #2 needs a lift to the shadows, but is another superb image. What I really like about these is that they have personality, which really adds something for me.

Hi all, looking for some help from you over the next day or so. I'm off work this week and have set aside just one day for a trip out with my camera gear. I have selected two possible locations, but can only do one of them so I need you to help me decide.

The choices are:

1. The Peak District - Dove Valley, for some landscape shots with my Pentax-M 28mm F3.5 and the 12-24 zoom

2. Bempton Cliffs with the DA*300 and 1.4 TC

Please vote for which you think I should choose!

Thanks for your help.

Cheers
David

I especially like the third with the Tak 135. Hope it's not M42 as I don't get on with them well.

The poppies look a little blown (perhaps the tip of the osteospurmum too) on the saturated colour. I've had that before with red on acer leaves. I think the sensors have a weak spot for not metering reds quite right.
Hi Doug, I'm afraid it is M42, but I leave an adaptor with the spring clip removed permanently fixed, so it's as easy as a bayonet lens.

You're right about the reds on the K55 image, they area bit blown, but there's nothing blown on the second one. With reds you have to underexpose quite a lot to avoid any blown areas. The nice thing about the K55 though is that the reds are true, no magenta tints.
