Also works on av using the AE-lock to set the exposure. And a PTTL cable and flash at arm's length will help with modelling.
David, I was under the impression the camera won't send a signal to a flash or a trigger if the shutter is faster than the sync speed, unless the flash is on HSS ?
You might be right Mark, I think I was referring to adjusting the flash output rather than specifically HSS. It's also interesting to explore slow speed sync at sundown or in a dimly lit indoor scene. Effects can be interesting.

I tend to upload full size images to Flickr and I haven't noticed any additional sharpening?

Great advice Nigel. You can also do similar with a manual flash, simply by reducing the power output of the flash. A bit more fiddly, but not too hard.

Number 2 is very good, but number 3 really hits the spot for me. This is more my kind of image, great colours, beautifully balanced and a superb composition. Nothing to criticise, everything to admire.

It's a lovely image Alan, I just wonder as always when someone posts a BW image whether it would be even better in colour?

Hope you don't mind me listing a selling point for the 28-80 John, it is an ideal lens for 'butchering', i.e. removing the glass so you can use it with something like a reversed Nikkor EL 50mm F2.8 enlarging lens. This combination is a killer macro setup.

DA*300 and 1.4TC works great for me, this would be my suggestion, although it's not cheap. However, for IQ the combination is unbeatable for Pentax cameras.

I would suggest that stu62 takes a look at Maria's Gallery (Autumnlight) and if he does not change his mind I would be amazed! Now that is art and if anyone suggests that it is invalid to produce images of that quality and artistic merit I think they should be sectioned. No offence Stu, but I really do think the point you are making is absolute tosh.

I think the trick is to get both eyes in focus and a diffused background. My preference is F4 to F5.6 or so for this type of image, of course it also depends on the focal length and the distance of the subject from lens and background.

You have nailed most of yours Alistair, hence my previous comment that you have set high standards.

David
