Has the OP tried some shots without the UV filter, yet?

Yep, excellent lens. Glad you've managed to find one.

The 55-300 hates filters. We've had this discussion before, a couple of times. Mine did exactly the same.

As newspapers cut their photography staff to the bare minimum I expect stock images to be used for news stories more common. I'm actually surprised it took this long from time magazine using a stock library image on their front page to a newspaper doing the same.
Yes, I'm sure you are right, Gary. But it's no excuse that THEY have cut their staff for using stock images that portray something that probably isn't happening.

This has to stray into politics a bit, John, as that's what the image was meant to do, cause a political storm. But we would be best to stick to this particular story, rather than the whole propaganda bit, I agree.

So, back to the image and what it was trying to portray. An image of a crying child at a foodbank wouldn't even mean what the Mirror was obviously trying to portray, and that was the idea that there are loads of hungry children queuing at food banks for food. I'd be pretty horrified if that was the case. But they haven't got a single photograph of that or, as far as I can see, any evidence at all for it. So, it's unforgivable, in that respect.....er, imho.

I also think it is going to be difficult to photograph a child within the context of a food bank story. Normally in a case like this in the corner there is usually text stating image posed by model etc...
Well then they shouldn't have used a child photograph. If they have a story, they have a story. No need to lie to put home the point....which was most likely more about politics than anything else, anyway.
So what image should they have used? The food bank story is very political but also the press needs to show sensitivity to the people who use them. I think it was a powerful image for the story, I think the mirror forgot to point out that it is was a stock image. As I said earlier to get a photo of a child crying at a food bank would have been difficult and possibly had complaints about exploiting children in a difficult emotive situation.
You are making the assumption that the whole of the story is true. Being a cynic, I'm actually wondering how many children have been found crying at foodbanks, and the answer I've come up with is approximately none.

That's why they shouldn't have used a child crying, never mind whether the photo was taken in the US 5 years ago. If they had asked a parent of a crying child at a foodbank if they could take a photo, they may have got the permission. But I'd guess they couldn't find a crying child at all. This aspect has been fabricated to give the story more political clout.
