I lied.

Just done some tests and:-

No vignetting at 80mm
No Vignetting at 70mm
No vignetting as far as I could see on the camera screen at 60mm

Vignetting kicks in between 60 - 50mm not a lot could crop.
Vignetting really noticable at 50mm but could crop if the subject was small enough.
At 35mm the resulting image is unuseable as far as I'm concerned.

Hopefully DS's tests will confirm the above.
Haven't done any yet. I had used the zoom at 68mm and had found no vignetting, but I thought that was about as far as it would go. Mind you, I didn't do any scientific tests. Your tests seem about right. i always take the zoom a little off 80mm unless I'm taking something really small.

Dr, I knew you'd come round to the Nikkor eventually!!

So you know why I didn't bother with all the different permutations, dr!

I'll need to get back to you, dr.

I'll do comparisons of the Nikkor on a DFA100 to the butchered zoom setup. But I gae up on the 100 pretty much straight away, as I'd also heard that Charlotte didn't like it.

I have no vignetting with the butchered zoom if I stay at 80mm or a little bit less. I'm not sure exactly where it kicks in. I'll do some testing.

Brilliant shots Neil, I must get one of those butchered zooms!
I'm selling mine for 150 quid!
Neil, I think you have added an additional 'zero' on the price of your zoom by accident

Cheers
David
Have you tried to butcher one yet?

Great stuff!

I'm still perplexed in how macro shooters stop the critters from flying off
I only take photos of the ones that don't fly off.

I didn't see the original thread. I also must admit to never having "talked' to Louise on this forum, mainly because I have been mostly absent for some time.

But I can certainly empathise with her, having suffered from stress and depression some years ago. It stays with you all your life, to a lesser or greater degree.

It would have been great if Louise could have found some support from this forum. Support for a member who needs/wants it is far more important, imo, than keeping to some stupid rule regarding "photo chat only."

These are superb and by the looks of it no insect was harmed in the process. I only wish I could master this form. Look at the foot detail in #15 - it's his/hers front left - you can see how they hang on upside down.
No dead insects. Well, not yet, anyway. If i find a dead one in good condition (if you see what I mean) I'll take a focus stack without the flash. I'm betting that could look quite good.

When I first started, I couldn't get a single shot sharp with this setup. Just really showed my poor technique even for standard macros. My technique has come on leaps and bounds, and I get a decent success rate now. And it makes standard macro seem quite easy!

Smashing sets, have you worked out your magnification with this set-up? Love the eye detail on the moth/butterfly no.12 anyway.
Not the first clue what the magnification is. Wouldn't even know how to work it out. The butterfly is a Comma. You probably can't tell from this close!!

More? OK.

Forgive those that aren't cleaned up properly!
