Lens shake?

Anyone else noticed this?
These were taken with K5 and 55-300 DA lens
I noticed this blur which looks like camera shake but they were taken at 1600th and 800th, I thought maybe i'd left the shake reduction on but no, i checked that. I took 3 images within minutes of each other but the blur seems worse on the third one, the 150mm @800th

These are heavy crops from the edge to show the effect

...and here is another shot cropped from the centre

Any help would be appreciated

Subject movement and camera shake can be found at all shutter speeds and what you have here is an effect which seems worse when you extended the focal length and used a longer speed. That in itself doesn't seem too surprising?

What is it we are actually looking at?

And what are the crop magnifications? It really doesn't look like something that would be significant at normal sizes. In any case, this sort of well defined edge blurring is preferable to blurring across the whole surface of the object.

I was tempted to suggest it might be diffraction, but I doubt it is because at these speeds, the aperture is probably wide open - which in itself is never going to give best results.

It might help to know what your aperture setting is and as Nigel has suggested, the crop magnifications. Also agree with John; what are we looking at? I guess we will also need to know weather conditions, firmness of ground, and robustness of stand.

For what its worth, I sometimes have problems with the same lens - most likely back focusing, but it doesn't look like lack of focus.

I'd also suggest checking if there is any Chromatic Abberation correction activated, whether on the camera (if JPEGs) or in your software (maybe an auto / default setting) - it looks like some fine edge de-saturation has occured, a bit like a CA correction after-effect. Try and switch off any of this and re-process to check the edges again.

This is the full image, it was 800th @ f7.1 ISO160
It is a rock formation on the beach

Taken handheld, bright sun.

I've noticed it a couple of times recently in high contrast shots, normally the lens focusses fine.

It was taken in raw format with no in-camera corrections or adjustments.
The above are reduced jpegs straight from the original raw files

It seems the other two shots (at different focal lengths but same aperture) also have it but not so defined

OK, but what are the CA auto or default settings on your RAW converter? I'd expect some CA to occur on this subject for many lenses. Camera correction settings will not have any effect unless you shoot JPEGs, or use Pentax Camera Digital Utility.

Yes I have a UV filter on, I'll try some without it and compare.

Many thanks for that

The 55-300 hates filters. We've had this discussion before, a couple of times. Mine did exactly the same.
This space deliberately left blank.

To me, that looks like CA that has been corrected. If it were camera/lens shake, the effect would be in the same plane, all over the edges of the image, but it isn't.

Looking at your second image, the aberration is perpendicular to any edge. That's not shake of any kind.

I've seen that sort of a thing before, but since I always use SR I'd put it down to the SR having problems or to some weird mirror slap. It is not a CA correction problem.

First thing I'd do would be to have a look at the RAW file with RawDigger or similar to eliminate any possible processing artefacts.

Need to put it on a tripod, mirror up, and either self timer or remote

Can't rule out technique until you do that

Yes, I agree - I suggested to the OP that he check the default / auto settings on his RAW software, as like Manesty also, I think it looks like CA correction. kh, why do you not think this is the case?

Agreed, but if it was slight movement due to shooting technique would the blurring / de-saturation as seen be restricted to a single edge?
