Off on my first holiday for 7 years and probably not going to ruin it with a camera bag full of lenses and angst about missing shots
So I'm taking my daughter's W90.
Has anyone got any experience of the D-range setting? is it a 'real' improvement in dynamic range or just a digital effect?

I noticed that with highlights and shadows ticked, it takes an image with very slightly less contrast and the incandescent clouds were slightly grey instead of burnt out. I'm thinking this will be a good setting for me as I can boost the contrast on the computer, but the images will lack pop straight out of the camera. Is this correct? or will I end up loosing definition at the extreme ends?

Wow! Alan these are fab.
I love 4, (apparently) swooping into the frame and applying the brakes - such beautiful shapes and colours.
And the last one from underneath, very different, well lit, and again, beautiful; I like the painterly effect on his body and the fact that it's blurred apart from the head.
You clearly have the knack with a long lens, steady hands indeed.

This has just got silly. Just remembered why I don't do this any more.
I don't know who that was aimed at Gary, but I for one haven't said don't use JPEG and I'm certainly not elitist. I've been editing JPEGs since 1992 (saving them as TIFFs if I wasn't finished).
But RAW is here and I'm taking advantage of it.

Algi, Nobody is saying JPEGs aren't editable.
Faststone viewer is another great program for cropping and rotating JPEGs without re-compressing.

I don't really care if JPEG was or wasn't designed to be edited - the fact is, you WILL further reduce the quality of your image, so why do it if you don't have to?

Have a look at the PU logo above, riddled with compression artifacts, if you can't see them - you're not allowed to comment on quality issues LOL

I don't post much these days, but I feel compelled to add my view to the mix.
I think Stephan is totally correct. The fact that you can still edit JPEGs is irrelevant - the quality is abysmal in comparison to uncompressed formats and particularly RAW.
Unless you are extraordinarily talented and have a plenty of mechanical devices to increase dynamic range, fill shadows etc. You simply must use RAW if you want optimal quality.
Having said that that, it's a steep learning curve getting images better than the camera's own JPEGs so in the real world, in-camera JPEGs take a lot of beating, especially if you are short of time, or storage.
I store both, JPEGs for speed and ease of viewing (only) and RAW for ANYTHING I want to edit.

This may be old news but it looks like great value to me.
16GB SD card
Are our cameras compatible with SD 3.0 Standards?

Apart from the above uses, all of which I use, they're really handy for holding the camera upside down, which I do a lot, or high above your head.
I love the feel of having all those edges to hold and stabilise the camera.
Last and not insignificant - I keep getting asked to do weddings which I hate, but I've learnt to charge accordingly and the grip just looks a bit more professional and reassuring in this sort of situation.

I got one of the cheap, Chinese ones from ebay for the K7. They look fine. Not as good a fit as the real one on my K10d but I don't know how close the K7/K5 ones should be, so I can't comment except to say I'm happy with the finish. The material is identical.
The switch is not a patch on the Pentax version; it's a bit loose, but it works fine. Really handy having a spare caddy to take 6 AA batteries.

Well, the equivalent Pentax version then.
I can't see anything about pass-through TTL functionality and the remote connector is the same... maybe I'm going blind

Anyone used these very similar triggers? They seem good.

The V5 writeup suggested they can handle large voltage differences - does this mean they can fire older flashes like the Metz 45ct?
