BTW: The last little chap looks like a wet version of the first two.
I'm not joking.

...the bird (can anyone tell me what it is?)...
It's a juvenile Starling. As the summer goes on and the birds have their first moult, you'll see ones going about with a mixture of this colouring and the familiar 'spangled' look of the adults.

How much cheaper can DSLRs get?
Refurbs come with a full 12 month guarantee, and everything included - but I know what you mean.

I have one battery, and use the grip for it's better handling (in my opinion). The grip arrived about a week later in the post, and I really didn't like the feel of the camera without it.
But the battery is in the body. Tried it in the grip, but felt the weight was too far over one side, and preferred it in the body, so that it was nearer my hand.
Bit of a pain to recharge, but there you go, not the end of the world.

However, have you checked sharpness at f/4, which should be better than the kit lens, or the corners of the frame, which are, from what I've heard, soft at wide apertures using the kit lens. If these don't have any prectical effect, and you don't need the wider angle, then perhaps you don't need the 16-45.

1) The K10D doesn't support TTL flash, only the P-TTL variety. It's not that your flash isn't a Pentax, it's just that it's now considered old technology...
2) Yes, you only need one 360 or 540 flash to benefit from wireless flash, the pop up flash on the K10D can be used to control the firing of the wireless gun. The pop-up can also be set to contribute to the overall exposure, or simply to tell the gun what to do.
Hope the helps,

My iP4200 has a 'Greyscale Printing' checkbox on the first page of the printer driver. Not sure whether this does actually mean it doesn't use any colours, but might be worth a try.
Other than that, you'll need to stick with one type of paper, and just adjust the 'Color/Intensity' until you get a good result then save those settings under 'Profiles'.
Or get a printer calibrator to go with your screen calibrator!
I don't think there's an easy, cheap way of doing it - it's either trial and error (costly in paper and ink) or calibrator (costly hardware).
