Do you think the build quality difference would account for the over 5:1 price difference in the two versions of the 50-200mm lens?
Currys at £29.87
Unless Currys have the price wrong.
Click 'Add to Basket', then proceed to checkout, where you can enter your postcode, or town, and they'll show you the stock in your nearest 3 stores.
I bet they don't have any.

I think what we need is someone who has both versions of the same lens to perform a visual comparison and real life tests. Matt, get your credit card out

The coatings will have different characteristics with regard to the amount of light reflected off their surface, and again at their boundary with the glass. Careful choice of materials means that very little light is reflected.
I think that's it!

No mention of any coatings at all on the Samsung website. Doesn't even come up in a search. I would have thought if the Samsung lenses had an SMC equivalent, they would be marked as such, although the abbreviation would be different - MFC? (Many Fantastic Coatings)

Does it look anything like this?

Not sure what you mean about "...opening the focus window as opposed to just the tab, renders all the controls in the main window inoperable" : So you can open a focus window? Not just the focus tab on the right hand side?
Don't have the focus area top-left default thing you have.
Zooming in and out on the preview is quick, but, on windows at least, you only get a hi-res rendering at 100%, all others, as far as I know, are lo-res. It's the 100% view that takes a second to render.
It does sound like the versions are quite different.
Just had a look at the Phase One website and a couple of Mac tutorials, and it is surprising how different it is.

my main objection in cap one is that the preview image is just a preview, and that theres no quick and easy way to view at 100% or indeed on non-aliasing reductions like 25% or 50% the preview doesnt tell you what magnification it is on. so you can never tell if the focus is really right...
Magnification is shown top right, along the little status bar, you'll see something like: 71%/17%. The second percentage is the magnification. Haven't been able to figure out the first, but it's 4 times the second.
Click on the magnifying glass, then clicking on the image will zoom in in steps of 25%. You can also use alt+up/down arrow.
and the focus tool is slow and clumsy.
I really like Capture One, and didn't get on with Silkypix. But many others love Silkypix, and if it's the noise reduction you need it may well be the way to go. I tend to use low ISOs when noise ain't a problem!

If you want to use the "ProPhoto RGB" you should find it in the Color Management Settings of Capture One.

Alternatively, shopping around does show the Pentax version at £149 (www.srsmicrosystems.co.uk, possibly others too).
