Again?!? (Without sounding smug, as that's not the intention, I promise )

Just the thought of judging again...

Thanks George, very nice that you could pop in to post that. Honestly didn't think I was going to win it this week, although I was obviously pleased with my entry, but thought others may well have been viewed as better. I'll leave that to George and his summing up on Sunday.

I'll have a think about a subject for the next one then. I'll let everyone know in due course. If everyone's in agreement, it might be worth letting this one run until next Sunday night (2nd Sept) so we get back on track with the Sunday finish.

One of the first things you need to sort out is how you name the folders and pages within them, to give you your web addresses, you don't want to be changing things once you're halfway through.

Personally I can't stand long addresses, so I've gone for a descriptive folder name (eg. 'blog') and the page inside is just called 'index.htm'.

So if I want to tell someone where to see my blog, I say "daniel bridge dot co dot uk, forward slash blog", which is about as short as I could get it. You don't need to say "index.htm", the browser will just open it. If the pages inside the folder have different names, you have to state them and the extension too (.htm or .html), which I think is messy.

I don't have any folders within folders, so I'm not saying "...forward slash pictures, forward slash exhibitions, forward slash bedfords..." which is messy again.

Oh, and keep everything lower case after the first slash, otherwise that's a pain too! Before the first slash, it's not case sensitive, but afterwards it is.

Does that make sense?

What I like about using notepad, or any simple editor (for HTML and CSS), is that you have total control over what the code looks like, so it's so much easier when you want to tinker with it to see what does what, and where particular elements in your pages are.

Dreamweaver and the like will leave you dumbfounded if you ever try to make sense of it.

Not sure, but basically anything you can do with frames you can do with CSS, and it's much better as far as search engines are concerned (all the code and text is on one page, not two or three which are often overlooked by search engines).

Check out 'absolute', 'relative' and 'fixed' properties for positioning with CSS. I bought the third edition of this book in a cheapo shop for a fiver and it's served me well. I have a look on the web to see if I find anything that might help.

I too used notepad and did the HTML myself, quite enjoyed learning it all. Used CSS for the layout, very few tables (just two I think), not a fan of flash so avoided that myself.

I already have a victim, sorry, candidate, in mind.
I vote for George, I think he'd make a good judge.

Entry to the competition would not be advised for the faint hearted or thin skinned though.

Yes, this is just the flash helping to light the subject to help the AF.

Bit disconcerting to start with though, isn't it?
