When I have the flash raised on the K100D and press the shutter and the auto-focus is having difficulty in focussing, there is a flash accompanied by a 'fizzing' sound. Is this as it should be? Thanks.

Yes, this is just the flash helping to light the subject to help the AF.

Bit disconcerting to start with though, isn't it?

Yes. In very low light the flash will, well, it will "flash" briefly in short bursts to help illuminate the scene and help the lens to "see" something to focus on. You will hear the tiny flashes as they go off.

Edit: Argh! a few seconds too late...

Thanks for the responses. I won't feel too bad when flashing now
