Even though he's facing away from the camera, I can say with certainty that he's a White Lipped Snail.

Lovely shot, all the elements work well together and it's well composed, not just 'as close as you can get to a snail'!

A macro lens won't have any different depth of field, if that's what you meant. They're just a lot easier to use than a lens with extension tubes (no fiddling around getting the correct combination on to get the magnification you want), and they're designed for this very purpose, so should give better image quality at short distances, although the 50/1.7 is very good in this respect.

Various bodies including an *istDS at £150 I think, a K10D at £279 (again, I think).

Didn't try anything out or look at it, just got the prices in case anyone was interested.
