Lovely shot, all the elements work well together and it's well composed, not just 'as close as you can get to a snail'!

A macro lens won't have any different depth of field, if that's what you meant. They're just a lot easier to use than a lens with extension tubes (no fiddling around getting the correct combination on to get the magnification you want), and they're designed for this very purpose, so should give better image quality at short distances, although the 50/1.7 is very good in this respect.I really need a decent macro lens! the depth of field even at f16 was just not up to the job.

thanks guys.
Dan, that was indeed the point I was pondering. I was hoping there would be some clever glass inside a macro lens which would make the DOF better. Looks like I just need tonnes of light.

If this had been in the contre jour competition I judged I'm not saying it would have won, Daniel's pic would take some beating, but it would have been very high up. Looks as if the snail is levitating. You say you put it on a wall but you've disguised the wall very well.

A lovely shot.
I think the only thing a macro lens would have possibly added was a nicer bokeh.

AH yes, I was wondering what variety it was, I knew I could rely on someone here correctly identifying the creature.
Devil's own job keeping him down for the picture, what you can't see is I've PP'd out the tethers.
Thanks for you comments folks.

Even though he's facing away from the camera, I can say with certainty that he's a White Lipped Snail. AH yes, I was wondering what variety it was, I knew I could rely on someone here correctly identifying the creature.

Wow, I must have missed this post!
The rarely found lesser spotted hover snail
And apart from the fact it seems to be hovering I think its an excelent shot.
I love action shots, did you use a fast shutter speed

- AH you joke my friend, but you would be surprised how quickly that little dude ooched out of shot! fast shutter speed
As this appears to have touched you lot, here are a few more - mostly near misses
All of these are just cropped a little and resized (USM to compensate) nothing more.
I liked the way his antenna looked like the dew

wanted to catch him coming thru this gap but he was too fast !! you can see why I was screaming for more DOF!

I really need a decent macro lens! the depth of field even at f16 was just not up to the job. He was about the size of my little finger nail... cute!
