I think winter landscape shooting is best done from either inside the car with the window open or from very close to the car. Your fingers can still grip the camera that way.

It also shows up an excellent use for (n)ever ready cases on things like the original KM - the back part stops your fingers going numb from holding a cold metal-edged camera body!

Ours has now got into the habit of leaving parcels in the conservatory, fine by us as the PO used to use that as a drop point for mail a few years ago (a van would drop off an extra bag for the second half of the round). It isn't visible unless you're halfway up the drive and peering in, so reasonably secure.

Our local delivery staff are great. The problem is the steaming nits elsewhere in the network who still owe me a camera case ordered two months ago!

Same here had day off to take some waterfall shots. But the thought of standing in cold water up to my cable release put me off.

Maybe next week.
Easy solution - do what I do and use a longer lens!

Rather have a Nissan GTR. It'll leave anything up to and including a Bugatti Veyron standing on the sort of roads we have here (EVO magazine tried it - the Bugatti couldn't catch up despite having roughly twice the power!)

Believe it or not that was one reason for my wanting the white one. It should wind "Serious Photographer" types up wonderfully when I'm producing images as good as theirs from something they dismiss as a fashion accessory!

You'll get much better results with a K-x or K-r, but it's a tricky decision as the K-r is about £130 more. Only you can decide whether it's worth the extra!

If they're cased then for goodness sakes remember to open them up and air them regularly. Both lenses I've got with the original hard cases had a fungus problem, which I strongly suspect is due to the cases not breathing terribly well. Lenses stored in the open or in Lowepro fabric cases with a silica gel packet haven't had any such trouble.

I take it the 70-210mm is an SMC Pentax-A? If so it's a keeper.

Just make sure you're getting the colour you want. Some of the multicoloured versions are much more interesting than the plain black ones if you want something different. I was considering a beige K-x for the desert explorer look but am probably going to order a white K-r early next month.

What always baffles me is when certain forums decide that a lens is soft (for example). Their members will then say this to everyone even when presented with images proving otherwise!

I don't really know how to respond to being told images aren't sharp when you've just blown them up enough to be able to read lettering which was a millimetre tall at a distance of a couple of metres from the camera...

I think there's a slightly more level-headed approach to faults here than elsewhere. Every brand makes mistakes, what counts is how they respond to them. Pentax have recognised the sensor marks problem on K-5s and are offering a repair service to everyone suffering from it, by most accounts they're also pretty good at dealing with SDM motor failures (which seem to have been a problem with earlier designs rather than more recent ones).
