Tax wise, I'm not too worried as I'm studying towards a fully qualified accountant I'm very aware of the tax situation in the UK (I don't mean to be arrogant by the way).
So you don't need me to tell you that you'll need to register with HMRC within three months of selling your first photo (unless you want a £100 fine that is).
Interesting point this.

What's the difference between someone occasionally selling a few photos, and being officially self-employed (which is what this registering within three months is presumably all about here)?

Can you be self-employed, with all its NI implications, as well as being a full-time student?

Primarily the lens will be used on K10D
Definitely forget K or M series lenses then. Get A-series or later, and if the lens has an aperture ring, set it to 'A' and on the K10D, set the aperture from the body.

i think the british retail industry is taking a turn for the worse. staff are not always properly trained to do their job and do not even know what half of the items they sell do. it is a real shame
It is a real shame, but it's hardly recent.

they should be trained to know what every item in the supermarket is used for and the translations.
A nice ideal, but to actually achieve this would completely change the sort of people supermarkets would have to employ.

It takes little in the way of intellectual abilities to stack shelves, but considerably more to memorise the amount of knowledge you seem to want - which the supermarkets would have to pay for.

Sadly, it's a fantasy that will never be realised.

Welcome!

What camera are you planning to use the lens on?

There are also the A-Series 50s, the commonest being the F2 and F1.7, though there's also the F1.4, and, I believe, the extremely rare F1.2.

Indeed there's lots of lens info here.

Possibly more than you wanted!

But it would be best if you told us what camera you're using first, and then advice will be easier to give.

I took a picture of a rainbow yesterday. I was sitting in my office, and it had been raining hard. I looked out of the window, and the sun had just come out. Idly, I thought, 'I wonder if there's a rainbow', so I looked outside and my jaw dropped as I saw the brightest bow I've seen for years.

I rushed for the camera, and although I caught it Ok, the view was just looking down the street, so no particular composition of note.

However, the question did occur to me, can rainbows be done effectively in black and white?

Many of the people here (myself included) think they're the best place to get Pentax equipment.

Chris, who works there, and is a member here, is a thoroughly nice chap, and gives excellent service.

i would ditch the film and buy new.
It's less then 2 years out of date - there's a good chance it's perfectly Ok. I wouldn't chuck it till I'd tried at least one roll out of each box. On something non-critical, of course.

I had some exposed films kicking about in a cupboard not all that long ago that were almost four years out of date, and when I got them developed they were fine.

The photos were still mostly rubbish though.

I reckon boats will be easier than quad bikes.

You'll be a lot further away, so the relative speed will be less.

you could manually focus on a certain corner or section of the circuit, and fire away as a boat passes through
Not 'as it passes through' - just before.

Concentrate on keeping the crosshairs on the same point on the boat and track it along - it is much easier said than done
Agreed, although auto-AF point selection and AF-C will be fine if they're moving roughly past you at right angles.

What lens are you planning to use?

I was looking for the "TT" effect such as when they come round a corner and you see the background blurred but the bike itself pin sharp
The camera absolutely has to be moving, to achieve this.

[Edit: well, for it to be motion blur, which is very different from the background just looking out of focus.]

Oh, and my apologies to Chris on the other thread, I was just a bit annoyed at being messed around and having the seller actually add words which were not even in his PM's"
No probs

So how do we get to a consensus on that?
You're kidding, right?

Seriously, I don't think it matters.

The powers that be would have no reason to object, since it's not taking up more space, and (I still think that) if you want a proper discussion about a picture, you're more likely to get it in the 'Your Photos' area. Nothing wrong with putting the same thing in the gallery as well, IMO.
