Mine is also around a year (/year and a half) old and purchased new from warehouseexpress.com. It definitely uses the SDM motor on my DA* 300mm and K20D.

I don't know whether having a fully charged battery in the camera would be a good idea incase that has a bearing on whether the power gets through or not - obviously it's not going to get through if yours doesn't connect all the way.

Sigma's EM 140 DG Macro Flash is indeed available for P-TTL now, as is the Metz 15 MS-1. However, the Pentax AF160FC isn't. It keeps getting shuffled in date for release (first November 2008, then December 2008, now January 2009) I don't expect to see it until after PMA 2009 now.

Odd. Mine definitely does work on the 300mm - I just tested it again.
