I use it when shooting macro as it helps pull details out of shadow. I don't use it when shooting birds as it introduces too much noise for me. I think it depends on the situation as to whether it's a good idea or not.

I use a Gitzo GM2541 and love it because it is so light, but still strong (Carbon Fibre). Not as short as your Manfrotto, though. However, I use it with a ball-head and lean it when I need to get lower (I use mine mostly for insect and plant macros). It's forever stuck in sand, mud, water and hasn't seized once. Pricey, mind.

I've been down this path. A very good diffuser as Don advocates will work for many situations for insects in the field. However, there will be times when this really doesn't work. For this reason I've gone down the route of the AF160FC ringflash and haven't looked back. It's is extremely convenient and easy to use compared to off-camera flash setups for this type of photography.

The pupal case shows it's the Large White. That's a fun find, a great story and some lovely shots of it

I'm getting quite interested in the HDR option now too in the K-7. I've not done much of the type of photography where you would use it, so it would be a nice new challenge for me. Most of the in-camera K-7 HDR shots I've seen on the web so far show off the feature very nicely.

That Pentax 35mm macro is certainly meant to be a lovely lens. I'd imagine it would be great for flowers and the like.
