teleconverter question

hi hope someone can advise. I got a cheapo TC off ebay a while back which is manual focus but enough of a cheap test for me to decide I do want to get one which can do aurofocus. I would be after 2x and see that there is a Sigma one on SRS for £99 which seems pretty good.

I wonder if anyone can advise on what else there is second hand to look out for? Some on ebay say auto but is that autofocus or auto aperture? For example this: link

I don't have DA* lenses by the way.

Any recommendations greatly appreciated.

The auto in most cases refers to the teleconverter having linkages that will enable the lens to focus at open aperture and then stop down normally when the image is taken. This is a mechanical link and nothing to do with autofocus.

There are autofocus teleconverters with electronic contacts but I don't see many of them around.
Best regards, John

maybe the new pentax one is worth waiting for? the Pentax-DA 1.4x one, though it's unclear how much it will cost.

It won't be cheap I would imagine. The Kenko 1.4 works with autofocus but not SDM. Not sure about the Kenko 2.0, I have one but haven't tried it yet.
As Mike-P reports the Tamron 1.4 works with SDM.

(Edit )Sorry mine is the Kenko 1.5 not the 1.4

I can recommend the Kenko 1.5X Teleplus DG - auto focus (screw drive) and auto exposure, around £85. Google to find it.

By the way, it fully works with the Tamron 70-300mm at 300mm (F5.6), even though it's only supposed to work at F4 and brighter. The image quality is surprisingly good as long as you can minimise camera shake.

1.5X and 1.4X converters generally have less negative affect on image quality than 2X, so look on the bright side!

good to know, thanks for that. i would be using it on my tamron 70-300. After taking shots of deer in Fountains abbey i really wanted a reliable TC to get the albino deer but they were just too far away. i'll post on the photo thread the good results i got.

I have the Sigma 2X (£99 from SRS) and its excellent with my Sigma 70-200mm f2.8 and Pentax F* 300mm f4.5 but it will only manual focus with the Pentax lens.
It will not fit many lenses though as the front element of the Sigma converter sticks out (unlike my Tamron 1.4X units) and so you need a recess on the lens you are fitting it to.

Easiest way to explain is male to female.

The Tamron 1.4X MC4 AF unit will work on everything and is actually pretty good.

I recently was loaned a copy of the supposedly best non-Pentax TC available, Tamron 1.4X PZ-AF MC4...I tested it with the Pentax 55-300 & found the results very disappointing & didn't purchase the TC...

I'd only recommend using a TC if you have expensive/high end glass, from my experiences at least the results with anything else will leave you disappointed...the new Pentax TC is intriguing although I tend to think the same "rules" will apply

The Kenko 1.5 does work with SDM, you need to make sure you get the one with the Pz designation as that model has the powerzoom connections that SDM uses. I have a recent one that works fine with the DA* 300mm.

It depends how serious a use you have for the TC. If it's just to pick out interesting extra detail in the distance, I found a cheap Kenko TC + budget Tamron zoom did the job.

It's easy to confuse camera shake with poor lens/TC performance. Using 300mm X 1.5 hand-held is not easy.

I'd agree a TC can be useful with a consumer lens if you choose not too be too fussy about sharpness. I tested the TC tripod mounted & hand-held but unfortunately just wasn't pleased with the results, I'm awaiting some feedback on the new Pentax offering to see if it's any better....also if it records focal length correctly which may help the IS a little

How much sharpness do you expect from a TC? More than this?:

I was delighted rather than disappointed with this. Fascinating I think to see detail that I'd never noticed before by eye on this familiar landmark.

Chirpy, My Kenko 1.5 has the PZ designation and the power zoom contacts but still does not work with SDM.
I will experiment a little more with it and try it on my DA*16-50.

Odd. Mine definitely does work on the 300mm - I just tested it again.
