Hi

I have an A-series zoom that has suddenly developed a problem with my LX. When I mount the lens, the diaphragm doesn't automatically open. In fact, it stops down and opens up as you turn the aperture ring as if there was no auto diaphragm control. Then, if I press the DOF preview switch, it opens up and works fine from then on.

The strange thing is, this lens works fine with my ME Super. And all other lenses work fine with the LX. It seems to be a problem with just this combination.

One other thing - this is my only A-series lens, so I don't know if this is significant or unusual, but after taking the lens off, when I turn the aperture ring, the little A-setting button moves up and down (or in and out, if you like) a few times, before eventually popping up to its maximum and staying there.

Anyone have any ideas about what's going on here?

Thanks

Peter

Interesting - that's more than I paid recently for two mint LX's (each - not the pair).

You don't need a projector. Just the sun and a hand-held viewer. Or a lightbox and a good loupe. Anyway, there's more to life than convenience. Who'd want to eat pizza every night?

I have been filing my old transparencies in slide pages on a lightbox and it has reminded me of the miracle that is film photography - each one of those vivid little 35mm gems of colour shining up at me is the direct result of light rays bouncing off friends, family, objects and landscapes and into my lens at that exact moment in time, 10, 15, 25 years ago. It's a kind of time travel. As for digital - strings of impersonal zeroes and ones that look different depending on what monitor or printer reassembles them? No thanks.

You will most certainly lose at least a stop depending on how many extensions you stick on.

My two cents on the Pentax-M 100/4 vs. Tamron thing: I have owned both and I found the Pentax's 1:2 magnification too limiting (I love big close-ups). Also, f4 was too slow, for two reasons: first, I like to shoot hand-held, don't mind the limited depth of field (use it creatively) and find that somehow, shooting at high magnifications sucks up every available bit of light.

Second, f2.8 gives great portraits. The Tamron is a simply superb people lens, with excellent bokeh.

Oh, and lastly, the Tamron is a little lighter. Of course, it's made of plastic, but for all that it is well made, with a really nice focusing action.

In the end, both lens cost around the same, but I reckon the Tamron is the more versatile and fun lens for the money.

I can heartily recommend the Tamron SP90 2.8 macro (the later model, 1:1 without an adapter). It's plastic, but has the most fantastic action and incredible bokeh. It's a joy to use and completely addictive.

Hi

I have a simple question - does the MF version of the Tamron SP 90mm macro have the "A" setting?

Thanks

Peter

I'll certainly bear that in mind - if I ever get the damn thing off!
