Recommend a 28-200/300 zoom for MZ5N
I had the Pentax 28-200 and found that a pretty decent performer, however I've heard that the later Tamron (not the one the Pentax is based on) is a bit better.
Given that none of these lenses are likely to be mind-blowing wide open it might be an option to consider keeping the one you've got an adding a prime or two (even manual focus ones) for when you need real sharpness and larger apertures.

The trouble is when I open it up to maximum aperture, f3.5, it is very soft.
I want a new lens in the same range or similar (28-200/300), but with a much sharper image at maximum apertures.
I've seen a Sigma 28-300mm F3.5-6.3 DG Macro and a Tamron AF 28-300mm XR Di LD Aspherical Macro IF f3.5-6.3 (62mm), and was wondering if anyone had any recommendations or thoughts on these.
I need the lens to be compatible with film (obviously) and ideally want the range to be 28-200/300 in 35mm not digital (I believe focal lengths for digital are different).
I'm also happy to buy second-hand if people could recommend a decent (not soft) lens.
Many thanks
