I don't know about the product but the viral marketing is working so well
Personally I think it is a flippy floppy thing for holding sprockets. Or maybe an executive beer glass holder for your tripod.

It'll only be good marketing if people subsequently go out and buy one.
Sure people will be talking about them, but in what context.
They might just end up being the guys who kept everyone guessing for a week then released a generic monopod/tripod/strap/whatever.

could also be a rotating gimbal tripod head a rotating collar to go from vertical to horizontal while maintaining free floating pan and tilt control....

It's intriguing for sure!
Perhaps it could be a rangefinder that fits in the hot shoe and couples with the cameras electronics to completely bypass the front focussing issue: A traditional solution to a modern problem.
