I might wait, I'm very pleased with the K5 at the moment so in no immediate rush..it does have something to compete with though so really needs to retain the qualities that have made me stay with Pentax so far

Agree, there so much more that I can do with the K-5 until then, but is this because I am an amateur photographer?

New 55-300 arrived today, surprisingly sharp at the price point, excellent value and a nice consolation for not being able to afford the DA* 300. Of course, neither will work on the FF. Better start saving!

I think Pentax having a Full Frame is the better chance of inroads into a larger pro-Market. That would catalyse more amateur sales.

I reckon as time goes by "full frame" will increasingly become what the camera buying public choose to spend their money on. It's the old more/bigger/faster/larger is better mentality. You can't escape it, it's hard wired into our brains it seems - why else would we want to upgrade our equipment periodically, whether Pentax or some other make. It's the lure of more...

So, it's sell a full frame or die in the long run IMHO. Look at the excitement that the US Pentax forum created with their April fools spoof! There's a definite market waiting for one. And what a chance to resurrect some of the FF lens back catalogue!

A segment may well buy into FF, but as a trend it's counter-intuitive. The mass market wants smaller, smaller, smaller, hence the rise of the cameraphone.

Still, the jury is out.

I hear what you say about camera phones, but I also read that increasing numbers of folk are also going out and spending big on DSLR's, sales of which have surged whilst compacts are dying like flies. Perhaps phones open up the world of photography and get more folks hooked. Then they start wanting all the features and options that only a DSLR can give. More/bigger/faster/better. It's back to the lure of more again

I would predict the death ( or at least major decien ) of the compact camera given that phones are starting to contain cameras equal or better. There'll always be a market for DSLRs IMO though.

Many many years ago, before I was born, comments were made when 135 format was introduced, and dismissed by those who continued with their (then standard) sheet film or 120 format cameras, saying it wouldn't last - it's still alive and kicking in the digital age (whether silicon or silver based) and the 135 is now the standard form - those with FF DSLRs dismiss APS-C as amateur/consumer - but it's just a natural trend - smaller doesn't necessarily mean inferior.

IMHO you might see two new cameras from Pentax, a FF and a replacement for the K-5. But they just might look the same, but with different sensors and different tweeks to the electronics etc.
This would save a lot on R&D cost, a lot of things are made this way just look at cars.
In money terms it would make sense for a company the size of Pentax.
