It's heftier than the 24-70 f2.8! 15 elements... >£1000... is this a bit overkill for a 50/1.4? I guess we'll see how it performs.

I suppose when we compare it to a Zeiss Milvus 50mm f/1.4 at around £1100 and the Pentax has a more complex optical formula plus AF then it could start to look very good value. When I spoke to Pentax they were suggesting that this new lens would be Zeiss quality and would "blow other marque lenses out of the water" or words to that effect.
It should certainly be very interesting.

For that price it will have to be the best performing 50mm lens in the world...bar none.

The Global market for it must only be a few hundred per year.

Very risky game Pentax are playing...they seem to be targeting their new lenses at Pro and Enthusiasts with very deep pockets...not enough of them though.

I think these will fly off the shelves.

If the spec above is correct it's a ridiculous lens (no wonder it's taken so long to develop it). Standard primes are supposed to be most useful by being small & lightweight. If I were Zeiss, I'd put the ZK lenses back into production pronto!

At least there's no danger of the F & FA 50s losing value as a result...

It is clearly intended to be a spectacular lens, not a "normal" standard prime.

It will, according to Pentax, deliver exceptional performance from the centre to the edge even at 1.4. It has 15 elements in 9 groups. Heavy ...... of course it is going to be heavy !

That is exactly what they should be doing, and you are wrong about numbers - why else are other brands expanding their full frame and now medium format offerings? Pentax has a good range of different priced lenses and it makes sense to offer top spec products designed for higher mp sensors as well.

This does change the concept of the "standard" lens, I agree with johnha about that. It's obviously not intended as a kit, starter type of lens, easy to carry around, high quality but simple and light (I think those were the key qualities in most standard 50mm options from the past).

I really hope it does fly off the shelves, as profits for Ricoh equals continuing new developments for all of us ..... I'm just unsure if I understand who this lens really is for (well, the well off Pentax user obviously), but it's extremely rare to see any images actually taken with peoples 50mm lenses, and we know that most people have one or many presumably mostly just gathering fungus and dust.

I am a bit sceptical whether there is the will to actually use a lens like this, and pay for it, in this day and age. I do hope we soon see development of things like an 80-250 F4, or a 20mm F2.4, which are ones I can imagine being used a great deal.
