Broken Sigma Zoom Mechanism - Advice Needed

Hi Everyone

Whilst on holiday this year, my most used lens broke, at least the zoom mechanism broke and the lens now has to be manually pulled in / out and will not zoom by twisting the zoom ring. Also, there must be something loose inside as the zoom gets stuck sometimes even when moving it in and out by pulling / pushing.

Has anyone ever had a repair to the zoom mechanism on a Sigma lens? It's a 17-70 F2.8-4 HSM OS.

Any advice on repair possibilities / potential cost would be gratefully received. At present I'm thinking it might not be economical and might be better just to buy a new one.

Regards

I would phone Sigma directly, they are very helpful and should be able to give you an idea of price there and then. I usually recommend Alan for most lenses but found Sigma to be close on price and a fair bit faster (plus I always try to go with the manufacturer if I can).

Thanks Mike & Barrie, really helpful advice, I will do both of what you suggest and see where it goes.

Cheers

You sure it's not still in guarantee? I think Tamarind have a five year guarantee, not sure about Sigma.

Sigma's normal extended warrantee period is 3 yrs.
PS: I second Mike P's suggestion to simply call Sigma Imaging UK and discuss the situation with them as my experience with them has been the same as his.

Thanks to Mike-P, spoke to Sigma UK and they can repair for £95. Much better than spending £350 on a new one!

Cheers Mike.

That sort of response is why (from experience!) I'm a Sigma fan!

PS: If ONLY we could get similar service from Ricoh-Pentax!

Is there any service from Ricoh at the moment?

I almost said the same thing myself - but refrained from doing that "out of sympathy" for Pentax owners currently "in similar trouble"!

I'm sure they have a contingency plan in place, after all this is a multi million pound company we are talking about.

Well, I don't think we have heard/seen anything "concrete" so far, and then what happens after Brexit (UK Pentax "Support" having been run from France for a long time)?
