I think CSC and dSLR combo would be an awesome addition and would definitely make the camera world more interesting, it is not in this case. You can see that the "two parts" are not seperable. There is no gap in the corner so doubt it splits. Also the mirror box and supporting mechanical xonnextions might make the CSC look rather half looking.
The white one looks quite decent.
Just my two cents.

I agree the mirror box looks tacked on, but doubt it is removable...
My guess is it might... have a hybrid af system . pentax does have a patent for a sensor shift af module that moves the sensor to achieve focus . this would work great for video af while the mirror is up.... just saying...
it would also make sense if that same system was employed in the new Q s1... on the software end... after all the video specs on ks1 and qs1 are BOTH limited to 1080/30.
a d-slr that works like a CSC mirrorless with wi-fi and ios apps would be desirable to younger buyers... and video shooters...
after all.. once the mirror locks up... all current pentax d-slrs with live view are essentially CSC mirrorless cams with BAD af... fix the AF and there's no need to remove the optical finder...

I wasn't thinking that it would a user changeable affair, that's another line of thought with promise for sure. I was thinking that the same basic chassis could be built two ways, one DSLR and one CSC. That would mean the same basic cost with two production lines then stemming from it.
If that would actually work it could be interesting.

ah, now I understand.. yes I agree... it is VERY possible that a mirrorless camera based on this unit could be in the works.... perhaps branded under ricoh with modular lensmounts... a GR-S1?
your choice of K, Q, 645, 67, C, T, screw,4/3's lens adaptors?
there was rumours of ricoh patents for 4/3 class aps-c sized lens patents..
ricoh patent

I must admit, that would look nice beside my macbook pro...
I want one for Christmas... don't even bother wrapping it up. Just hang it on the tree and light 'er up!

I'm sure it'll be a runaway success and bring PENTAX much attention.
It's probably the first DSLR that actually looks like it's from the 21st Century.

I think the black dot in the handgrip is a cloned out circle to hide the spot where the projector lens resides.... and I'm guessing the 'tacked on" look of the mirror box is becuase this camera share a common chassis and electronics as a new ricoh grx replacement mirrorless camera.
JR said it and I agree with him on that.

Are you serious? A projector lens for what?
If it was a blanked out hole I would expect it to be the same colour as the case.
I think its much more likely to be the IR detector for a remote. All my later Pentax DSLRs, and my Qs, have these here on the front grip but also have one on the back as well which I can't see in these pictures. However my old *ist DS only had one here on the front so perhaps this is still a feature of an entry level DSLR.

agree that is where the ir reciever is on the kr.. but I am just speculating... the mini projectors are becoming popular ... with nikon and sony... and if pentax wanted an entry level d-slr to comepete with other brands mirrorless... then why not? Ricoh did patent a micro projector lens a while back.... and if they're possibly using the same chassis for a grx mirrorless model and a pentax d-slr model... why not?
ricoh did patent a 4/3 sized lens recently.... perhaps a kit lens for the mirrorless verson of this camera, and perhaps a kmount module will come out for tHAT camera as well..???? who knows...

If the design is accurate then it strikes me that the mirror box could easily be removed and we'd end up with a CSC. Either for current lenses with an extension of some sort to give the correct back focus or a thinner body with new lenses.
In this scenario I'd imagine a design that could share quite a bit of manufacture between CSC and DSLR ranges, thus reducing costs and making introduction faster.
Quite , it looks as if you might be able to slide the compact camera bit out of the viewfinder/lens-mount bit and presumably use compact CSC lenses on it rather than the K mount stuff. That really would be a first it it were true and give a tremendously versatile kit. Unfortunately I can't see how you would get enough space with that for a mirrorbox so, if it were to work like this, I think we would be talking EVF rather than OVF.
