Wow that was quick, thanks John. Looks good on my Macs, and (surprisingly) even my iPad which has pretty poor performance down at the black end of similar scales.

On my work monitor, I cannot see the darkest square, but that is to be expected as I have it set fairly dark.

Hmmm - I can only see 15 squares but if the 16th is the black band - then I see all 16

I only see 15 too - I assume the 16th vanishes into the pure black background?
I'm not too worried though. I too have my monitor set quite dark.

Great work John! Tiny suggestion - maybe a white 1 pixel box around the lot so people can see the 16th (black) one?
Still shooting in the dark (literally and metaphorically)...

The 16th is the black background - black is black! This slight anomaly occurs because on EPZ the background isn't black.

John. This is really timely. Lagging behind my fellow club members on print comps, I am thinking of getting a monitor rather than using the laptop.
I think I can recall you reccommending a monitor, possibly a Dell. I was intending to ask your advice and also how it could be colour balanced ( I believe this is the correct term).
I suspect members have their own favourites. Suggestions would be welcome, please.

Dell 2209WA is the 22" version we use. Excellent right out of the box.

You should be looking for a monitor with an IPS or S/M-PVA panel(definitely not TN)and a non-glossy/reflective screen. In the 22 - 24" size range reasonably priced models (£275 - £325) are now available from Dell, NEC, HP and, even cheaper, Viewsonic. If you want to read about the colour quality and gamut of recent models this is a good place to start: link

Amazingly, my iPhone shows all 16 levels. Our monitors have no problem either!
