Thanks guys, I've passed your comments on and will await further feedback.
It's one of those faults that pops up out of the blue and it could be weeks before it happens again. None of the Leeds garages appear to be able to fix it (indeed appear never to have come accross it before - cue intake of breath through clenched teeth, then "can you leave it with us whilst we clock up a few hundred miles/use up whatever fuel is in the tank and charge you for the privelege of being none the wiser")
regards
Bernard
He's looked at a Veyron but the hills around Hipperholme would play havoc with the clutch.

My wife's Austin Metro developed exactly this problem, years ago. Lost power when overtaking (frightening) and going up hills (a nuisance), but OK again after a short rest. Local British Leyland garage couldn't find anything wrong. A little village garage in North Yorkshire diagnosed a petrol pump fault, replaced it, and cured the matter. Those were the days when cars had proper carburettors, and there was no internet, let alone engine management CPUs etc.
Just a memory; no actual help to Bernard (or anyone else).

Try the experience of this happening to a Ford Galaxy [ Diesel engine so VW one ] when pulling a caravan up an incline on the M74 in the middle lane and the engine just lost all power . That was nasty !
Can't remember exactly what the fault was but it took a week to get it sorted. Insurance weren't happy [ we claimed as we were heading for the booked ferry to France ] as we insisted that with a VW engine it was to be dealt with by VW agents [ Ford didn't want to know - we tried them first - they said VW ]
Once sorted we went off to France and it never happened again

f you think we were going to tuck in behind a car doing all of 15mph - you have another think coming - we were aiming to pass at 50 and then pull in and carry on at 50 !!
My husband was a professional driver ! We used to do about 40000miles a year towing !

ESP=Electronic Stability Program.
Or in other words, the bit what stops wheel spin, wallowing, brakes locking up and stalling(on some cars).
What happened to throttle control and springs??

That's old fashioned now - everyone knows that electronic stuff is the way to go
UNTIL
It gives up at a most inconvenient moment [ and it's always then ]

Why not limit all caravans to the M74, or better still the A99People towing caravans in the middle lane of the M74. Now there is a topic I have a strong opinion about...!

The real problem with the M74 is it can be quite windy. When I lived down that way the motorway was closed at least once a week because a caravan overtaking a lorry had blown over.
How about all caravans being restricted to circling the M25!

Which is why I can only post a couple of dozen updates a day!
And it's not quite warm enough to sunbathe in Auld Reekie today.
