My son has just left to return home to Leeds. His car is acting up in the sense that it occasionally loses power at high speed and he finishes up travelling at 20-30mph, which on a motorway is exasperating.

Pull over and stop, restart the engine and all is well.

Has been into the garage and they replace a filter which is blackened (not sure which filter). Apart from thet the garage is stumped, which is a little disconcerting.

Vehicle is a VW Golf Club 2 litre diesel. I had that problem once, it tuned out to be engine management but my car was petrol.

Anyone any ideas that might be useful

regards
Bernard

Shouldn't that be in Leads to Deals?

If the pressure drops it may well go into 'limp home' mode. It could be an oil pressure issue?

I had this problen in a Vauxhall Zafira 2.0 CD. (05 reg) after it's first service at a Vauxhall main dealers. Touch 70 and an orangre warning light came on and the car lost power. Luckily I didn't find out durring overtaking I reported this but the garage were unable to find the fault, they said. Looking online this was a problem with Vectras too. Eventually got fed up doing 68 on motorways so traded it in. An AA guy said all I could do would be to wait, with the orange light showing ie engine running until the AA arrived on scene. I wouldn't have another Zafira as a gift now

Try a Google search Bernard, these faults are often discussed
on car forums.

Helped me tremendously when my Bugatti Veyron was leaking water out
of a radiator hose and the garage couldn't fix it!

I had the same problem with a Citroen xsara. It happened twice and the garage found nothing wrong. I quickly got rid on a px deal.

Xsara Picasso showed 1/4 tank of petrol...

...stopped at traffic lights and engine died....

....turned out it was empty, no fuel at all!

A quick computer update and the problem was solved and the car went on to do 100,000ish miles before we swapped it for the C4 Picasso we have now.
Cheers, HG

There are loads of different problems that could cause this - as suggested above I would check on line for 'chat' related to this as it could be a dodgy sensor or something more serious.

I would recommend having the car plugged in by a specialist as they will often identify the issue very quickly - dealers seem to take longer and charge more.

One con that's seesm to be around is people being charged for work on their esp (or similar system) once the cars limp home mode has been activated - the esp systems need to control the throttle (as well as other things) and cannot do so in limp home mode so the esp not working warning (if he has this) is more often a syptom of limp home than a fault in itself and should not normally require a fix other than whatever caused the limp home/ money conning dealer mode to be activated. Hope this helps
