You get cod liver oil when you eave the Arctic on the Hurtigruten. Didn't get aquavit with it this year though.
Halibut is on the menu on board too. Not the liver though - the Norwegians keep that for themselves, along with the cod's tongues.

Last year they served cod in the Norwegian way for lunch one day - cod topped with it's liver and roe. Didn't go down too well by all accounts.

This year they served klipfisk for dinner, which was a waste of good cod imho. The baccalao on the other hand was delicious.

Yesterday I pruned a lilac tree so that I can replace the fencing behind it. Decided that as it was going to be a long job I would listen to the new Chris Isaak album on my phone using headphones. Started pruning at the bottom of the tree with a pair of secateurs and really enjoying the music then silence.
Checked the music player on the phone and its was still playing then saw the wire hanging down that should have been connected to the headphones. When leaning forward I must have cut through it. Good job it was not an expensive pair of phones. Now using blue tooth headphones. The Chris Isaak album is good with lots of classic cover versions.

On the factory trawlers we used to station "the man who could do it quickest" behind the fish heading machine to remove the cheeks from the cod heads. It used to take quite a while to get a bucketful but was worth the hassle as deep fried the cod cheeks are really good eating. Coley was the best fish for making fishcakes and and pickled monkfish was ambrosia. A fish commonly known as a "squaddie" (AKA norwegian haddock) becaue of it's bright red colour was used for making fish soup.

I've just gone through some change I got whilst out shopping yesterday.

.

I'm usually quite quick to spot dodgey money, but missed this one as its exactly the same size as a 2p piece, but with a blokes head on t'other side.

Question have I been diddled or is it worth more than 2p

Was worth about £2 last time I was in Belgium, but that was 1979.......

Worth nothing now I guess, but you'll need 30 X 2p to get a first class stamp soon so no great loss.

I don't think you can swap in Belgian franc coins any more. I know you can't swap in Guilder coins now. Paper money yes, but not coins.
It would be worth about 50 €cents or 41p at today's rates.

So I've been had, is what you're saying.

It won't even fit the car park machines either as they have a minimum of 5p (some don't even accept those).

Looks like I'm stuck with it

How was that for a pointless bit of chat?

Haven't been able to swap Belgian coins for Euros since December 31 2004 I'm afraid.

You could always put it a tip pot. A bit mean I know but it will get rid of it for you.

Now if it had been a Mark, Schilling or peseta you could still have swapped it. You'd have had to go to Germany, Austria or Spain to do so though .

Gwyn, My whole comment was tongue in cheek, for 2p it's hardly worth the hassle, besides I know who passed it to me so I'll wait until there's a queue before I shout up from the back about passing dud coins.

Bernrad

Edit, I think I'll change my name, I'm forever spelling it wrong

My wife has just been to the local Morrisons for the weekly shop.

The queue to get in to the fuel station is backed up onto the main road, when she finally got into the car park, she found that cars are racing each other through the car park, to try and jump part of the fuel queue.

When she came out and back onto the road, which is within the 30mph zone, she had to pull over, because there were two cars racing side by side, trying to get to the queue first.

Do we now live in a lunatic society ?.

I dead to think what would happen if there was a real emergency in this country.

Take care.
