I must have missed an installment Gwyn, How does Vet, Wales, Roast chicken dinner in Holland link up?

Youngest son's other half is a vet, well will be soon. She goes to Wales every year to help with lambing at a farm near Wrexham. She left on Friday, straight after her grandmother's funeral.

So he is on his own, and was looking for a free meal and some company - hence the roast chicken. I needed my dongle unlocking. He likes faffing with computers so whilst His Nibs watched the footie, and I cooked the dinner, he unlocked my dongle for free.

Gwyn - would you ask him do I need to buy a Panasonic TV dongle for my Viera Plasma or will any tv one work ? The prices range from £70 down to £13 on Amazon and I don`t need it that much, but it would be nice to stream Lovefilm movies straight to the set.

Thanks

Just noticed the article on right angle finders..

... now I know this sounds a little OTT but..

...I won on ebay a Zig View S2...

.....for a lot less than the opticle versions go for, and it works realy well considering the poor image quality on it's screen. It cost me a little over £12!!
Cheers, HG

The Fish & Chip shop did burn down a while ago and was rebuilt. The museum at Dunwich is well worth a visit. You are right in that most of the town is 3 miles or so out to sea. It`s difficult to take in if you are on the cliff top and look out over the water.

For even better fish and chips the place to go is Aldeburgh, a little South of Dunwich. You can easily find the shop, just look for the queue!

If it's a USB then you shouldn't need anything special. Buy this from Amazon, then if it doesn't work you can send it back for free. (Remember that under the distance selling rules you are allowed to open something to see if it works the way you want and that Amazon will cover the return postage).

Thanks for that Bernard, one of the episodes I missed. It's marvellous how they can reconstruct a whole town from a few relics

Thanks Gareth - one or two conflicting reviews on the site but worth a try at that price.Still unsure as to the suitability for a tv as all the reviews were for laptops.

Thanks again

I've actually got one myself (as the built in one in my laptop wasn't too good). I noticed a lot of the reviews were from people who didn't fully understand that the speed would not increase unless the router was configured properly.

In theory TVs (and other web devices) should be using the same protocols. They'll just buy them off the shelf, 'test' them, put their name on and charge a huge markup!

Thanks again Gareth - I think the major moan is that the signal can drop easily and too far from the router does not help.
Rather than a dongle maybe I will experiment with an ethernet cable and Jo`s laptop as a booster.

There are a couple of things you can do:

The first is a little technical (I don't mean to be rude, I don't know what your level of skill is) which is to change your router to 'N-only'. Your router needs to be 'N' capable and you will only be able to connect 'N' equipment to it.

The second is to buy a powerline ethernet kit. Plug one in near your router and one at the tv then plug the ethernet cables in. You can get them for around £35 (example). They are pretty good these days and will work in most homes.

I forgot to say, if you buy a powerline kit you can go further and add a second router (ie modem, but not used as a modem) which would then give you a second wired/wireless access point. Then you can connect your tv wired or wirelessly and you should have less of a problem with dropout.

A few years ago I had a modem with my laptop plugged into it. Now I have (in the house) four mobile phones, three laptops, an ipad, a media box, Sky+, a NAS, a Wii and an iPod all working from the modem. When did that happen!

I know the feeling !!

I have an NTL cable modem,a Belkin MIMO router and a Cisco router and a Linksys router all working in parallel as I do surveys for Ofcom etc about speeds of upload/download.

Quite honestly it all seems too much faff for streaming movies from Lovefilm when I rent 3 at a time anyway - I`ll do what I do with pentax and wait until the price comes down !!
