Matt - total agreement .

Our transport museum used to be child friendly - but for pities sake - why hang bikes from a rail from the ceiling and call it a Velodrome ??

I've been watching with great dismay the destruction of the Bristol Industrial Museum and its mangling into something which seems to be terribly PC and trendy but appears to have lost most of the best exhibits. It used to be a proper museum in what was obviously a little-altered transit shed, now I'm amazed they've been allowed to keep the cranes, boats and trains active.

If you really want to engage people and make a museum relevant then get the exhibits working. Make them live. Ok, this isn't possible for everything (the original Stephenson's Rocket for one - in this case a replica does the job) but clouds of steam and whirring motors will do more to keep kids entertained than any number of interactive displays. As for originality, parts were replaced all the time. So long as the replacements are made to the same designs and using the same techniques as the original then why is it a problem? Keep the broken bits and hang them on the wall if you must!

Hooray - a man after my own heart

Why put nice old cars on a ramp going up a wall ?

The redheaded hoover even commented on the stupidity of railing off a car , but opening its back door when you couldn't actually see inside because it was too dark !!

Now when a 16yr old says that - it says a lot.

It's taken the best part of 30 years to get the Moulton on display - so why put them where you can't see them . AND the floor plan shows a velodrome - it doesn't say it's 20 feet in the air !!

OOOOOOOH I'm going to enjoy filling in the comments form

I have the baby Sony. Can't remember it's proper title.

I thought of getting a Kindle - but I would have had to order it from the US and pay a fortune to get it. Couldn't order one from Amazon.co.uk, even though I can order physical books from them.

My husband was given a Samsung when he left his last contract so getting the Sony made sense so we can share books.
I'm very happy with it and have been reading a lot more since I got it.

They are nice devices. Shame they don't have the content infrastructure that Amazon have put around the Kindle.

Was the Samsung device one of those things that resembled an oversized phone (with linear slide)?

Yes this is it.
No idea why they bought that over the bigger Sony.

I'm always dubious about any monopoly, but the Kindle seems relatively benign compared to some. You can at least download free out of copyright works from Project Gutenberg to load onto it. Slightly surprised they won't sell you one outside the UK, given our local Tesco currently has them on the shelf!

My parents have one each. The free 3G access is very handy on holiday as it seems to work in mainland Europe too, so they can check news sites to find out what's going on as well as looking for opening times, campsite addresses, details of hypermarkets, etc. It's monochrome, slow, and rather limited but it's perfectly capable of, say, going to a retailer's site and pulling up store location listings.

We can download out of copyright books for free too. And I have found a US site which will sell me a lot of books, but not the aforementioned Keith Richards biography.
I pay on average €2.50 a book which has to be good news, certainly compared to the price of English paperbacks here.
Since I also read Dutch novels I am very happy with the e-pub format. Kindle don't have Dutch books afaik.

Now the good news is that the sun has got his hat on and is coming out to play .

Bass and Bligh of course!

The only other camera shop is Jessops and they carry no pentax kit at all!

I've just been surfing the net and came across THIS site, that should help me get my head around how to use the new lens.

Museums should be living places, like Beamish or Blist Hill. The PC people just don't understand...

It needs to, Carbon Tax in Australia, announced today, $23 per ton of CO2.

How many wind farms or solar panels = one gas or coal fired power station?

Yup, I don't believe in global warming.

You'll be able to buy fresh Australian air real soon as there won't be anything else to export.

They hold as much as anywhere else in Yorkshire, and they are a Pro dealer.

Their website is a bit sparce, but they've only recently got it running properly.

Hmm, Leica M9 body only or used Subaru Forester and a K5 with kit lens (seriously, you could have either for the same money)...

I think I'll take the latter, bit more useful!
