The new directives seem not to apply to "industrial" premises
I don't have any - my workshop is at home (hobby status)

I've also stocked up on as many as I can, but they're getting harder to find. I'm hoping that the LED versions come down in price and availability before I have to use the toxic option.

I think the biggest waste was one of the "sheds" filling skips with perfectly good bulbs when they decided to take up the change-over earlier than legislation required.

I was thinking more of the Cloverleaf style Inns where 70% of the takings is from food, they don't really cater for drinkers/smokers link

I was trying to find a picture of one, but they don't seem to bother with the web. This one link just has a few small outdoor canopies and no doubt heating under the table (or maybe not on that one). Some of them have massive tables and canopies outside and huge heaters, probably sit 8-10 people round a table.

I know the sort you mean Agi - they have them here too.

Tony afaik it is only the frosted incandescents that are banned at the moment. Clear ones will be phased out over the coming couple of years, and that includes for industry.
The new lamps are basically florescent tubes made small. Or LEDs which are more expensive but are definitely the way to go. As I said when a bulb goes now we replace it with a LED. I have replaced a few halogens lately with LEDs, and the old style bulb in my bedside lamp finally blew last week so that now has a LED in it.
Because the other sort are basically florescent tubes they don't like being switched on and off a lot and are happier left burning, which rather defeats the object of course.

Have you noticed in films and on TV programmes how people leave all their lights on all the time, even when they go to bed, or go out. Unless it is CSI in which case it is always dark, and a Maglite is essential.

Bernard - you can qualify "any" premises as industrial - that`s the joke of the legislation - fill your boots !

Cornwall is one big place to visit Barrie - I`ve only scratched the surface - Daymer beach is fabulous for kids, water sports, and mussels !A walk along the shore at low tide takes you to Rock ( if you walk across the golf course it passes the churchyard where Sir John Betjeman is buried at St.Enodoc`s church )and a ferry £3 takes you to Padstow.Boscastle is a lesson to us all in how people survive disaster. All the usual touristy places are worth a visit - Tintagel,Clovelly,St.Ives,Mevagissey,St.Austell,Land`s End etc etc.North coast is the mecca for surf sports.
Have a great holiday and I hope the weather behaves for you !

Cold Cathode bulbs are a lot better and cooler, but harder to find. They last a lot longer as well. Not new technology either Ansel Adams used a Cold Cathode Enlarger. Some bulb info link

They also put radiant heaters under the brollies, so that people can sit outside in winter.

I'll start to believe global warming requires me to accept "bunny hugger bulbs" when I notice that London's office blocks are dark at night.

I accept that the bottom floor maybe needs to be lit (for security purposes) - but all the way to the 30th and above?. How many polar bears has the Gerkin killed?

Dunno what the bulbs I have in store are - we got freebies from Scottish Power [ 2 carrier bags full !! ] from the Council , another lot from Scottish Power .

I also have some 'old bulbs' for places where I need instant light [ got those in when I realised there were going to be problems and they seem to be good quality , not like the cheap B&Q ones Raymond got for some 'security' lights on Time switches .

The B&Q bulbs were dreadful - blowing if you looked at them so in disgust I've managed to get a sort of candleshaped low energy one in that socket which is working very nicely

Can't see me ever using up all these light bulbs.

I had two Philips long life bulbs that failed after 7 months. Both inside a day of each other. I sent them back to Phillips who sent me four replacments. I did not have the reciept. Good service but how long will these last?

I've stuffed a Tesco LE bulb in for now, but will be looking closely at the halogen ones which now seem to be available.

If only someone would make LED bulbs with built-in reflectors. I have one of these which will illuminate a medium sized room well enough to read by, providing you can bounce the light from a white ceiling.

SO who has the sun today? I borrowed yesterday, but have given it back. Looks very dark outside now. I am supposed to be taking Merlijn to the zoo today but I'm not keen if it is going to rain all day, but if we don't go I have to come up with some other way of entertaining a 4year old all day.

Plus I get another pooch to look after today too. My eldest son's dog, the ship's dog, had to have an emergency operation yesterday after some idiot guest left a fish hook, with some meat bait on it, on deck. Duque of course went for the meat and swallowed the hook. Anyway, he won't be able to cope with the boat for a while so he is coming here to recuperate.

Sorry Gwyn - I've not got it .

You could try teaching your 4yr old to do some cookery Messy - yup but that's fun and he'd enjoy eating the fruits of his labour

I'm just thinking that this darn weather will have to improve - my weed remover arrives tomorrow evening , and if this goes on he'll be swimming round the garden

We went to the zoo. Had a great time, until the heavens opened. We headed for "the Night" and admired the sloths and bushbabies and porcupines and other night time wonders in the dry.
It was still raining when we left there so we headed home. I finally took him home at 7.30 and I am exhausted!

At least the extra pooch didn't arrive so that was a relief. The vet thought he'd be fine on the boat, and certainly better off with his master than with me. If it proves otherwise I will go and pick him up.
