Too warm and sunny here. I didn't move to the frozen north to end up with 32C! It was bound to happen after we had the new lawn laid though.
Car overheated on the way home from my haircut on Friday. Redlights ablaze shouting pull over stop! I let it cool at the side of the motorway then whacked the heater up to full, opened the windows and nursed it home (luckily only a few Kms), lovely in the heat, not. Of course the garage was shut so it'll have to go in tomorrow. It had a service and MOT on Wednesday, cost a fortune in new brakes, now this. I hope it is nothing too serious.

In the glass at the moment, but not for much longer (), is Peckham Pale Ale from Brick Brewery of Peckham Rye. Less than 1/4 mile from where my grandparents ran a pub when I was a lot, lot younger. I kid you not, Rodney .

Fingers crossed for you ... Can't begrudge spending on new brakes, though, far too important to take any risks with them.Car overheated on the way home from my haircut on Friday. ... I hope it is nothing too serious.

Things under the bonnet to check before taking it to the garage (to minimise the chance of being "overcharged"):Too warm and sunny here. I didn't move to the frozen north to end up with 32C! It was bound to happen after we had the new lawn laid though.

1 - coolant level in the "header tank" is too low (and if so, then why? Leaky hoses/radiator should lead to obvious - probably? - whitish deposits near the leaks)??
2- electric fan not working - motor or thermostatic switch has failed (next suggestion might also give a clue to this as the fan should start a few minutes, maybe 10-15 minutes, after the coolant temp reaches "normal" when the vehicle is stationary) ?
3 - Engine internal water-circulation thermostat not working - should show up quite soon after you start it from cold because the coolant temperature gauge (assuming the car has one!) should show "cold" until the 'stat opens and then rise quickly to the "normal" level (about 90C), but then no further. However, if the temperature continues to rise above "normal" then (and assuming none of the above faults have shown up) the 'stat has probably failed to "closed" as it does on modern cars (whereas those on older cars the 'stats used to fail to "open", and then the system ran cold which was far less worrying!) ?
4 - water leak from the heater matrix or hoses inside the passenger compartment (wet carpet is a good indication of that :roll?
5 - if you get clouds of steam coming out of the exhaust when you start the engine from cold, then the engine head-gasket has probably "blown" and water is getting into the cylinders.
My initial guess would be the first one as it sounds like you have a water leak, or maybe the second if you don't.
BTW: I assume that you have checked that something has not flown through the external radiator grill and simply blocked the airflow to the radiator (??).

Done all that jeallen01. None of it as easy to do nowadays when everything is hidden with only a couple of yellow painted things to touch. There was no coolant and clearly a leak, but impossible for us to find at home.
Life was much easier when I had a Mk1 Cortina and could strip the engine myself (with a little help from Dad or a brother). I replaced the headgasket on that and just had my Dad check it was correct. Not sure I can even get to the head on this one. His Nibs used to work on our old cars so we both know engines.
I don't begrudge the brakes, but €900 was an unwelcome bill at this time.
Anyway it is back at the garage now, so no doubt another whoppa of a bill .
And Phew another scorcher!!

Yesterday I managed to find a Dyson face fan with cool function, out of stock almost everywhere else, due today. Parcelforce didn’t deliver, minutes before it was due they got a message allegedly from me to deliver elsewhere, and checking something else due yesterday the same thing. The local depot was adamant it wasn’t a hack and couldn’t explain it, and assured me they would come tomorrow, so another night of sweltering heat. The predicted storms keep passing us by so a crisp dry garden.

Sounds very odd, not to say dodgy RobL.
Another day in the low thirties here. All the blinds closed, sunshades down doors and windows shut until about 5 minutes ago when it was finally cooler out than in.
We have a ceiling fan in the bedroom which is very welcome. We used to have one in the living room at the old house but it was too big for this house as the ceilings are lower and it would decapitate someone.
The car is back. A very long, very thin hose had a hole in it.
Man came to fix our smart meter today as well, as it wasn't talking to our utilities company. Apparently our house is too well insulated for the normal internet connection it uses and he had to change it for an older version.
No break in the heat here until Friday, if we are lucky. Saturday or SUnday if we aren't.

Ref that hose with the hole: glad that that appears to have been the cause and is now fixed, but I doubt that I need to suggest that you'll need to keep a close eye on the coolant temps & levels for a few weeks to check that no other damage has been caused.

Good to hear you're back on the road Gwyn.
It's been hot here for the past few days but today's been cooler, I just hope it goes through the night.
Beer's running low and an order will be going in soon.

A mere 26C today. But it rained in the night so it is a humid sticky 26C. We didn't get the downpours and flooding some places got, but we did enjoy a couple of great lightning shows in the night. A long way away from us though - no thunder to be heard but they woke us up and kept us awake.
Sun shining again now but it won't last - forecast is cooler and wetter for the rest of the month. Fingers crossed for good weather on the 29th though or we can't have our socially distanced family gtg.

This Oop North is west of the Pennines, and it's hot but not humid. Still, we have a house full of Granddaughters at the moment, so rain or shine we are at their disposal!
Best regards, John
