Incoming call yesterday afternoon: cancellation, so slot available first thing this morning.

Up at 05:30 to clear snow from car, shovel snow off front of drive. In for surgery by 08:30 and sent home by 14:30.

Sore but glad it's done. Four weeks on the sick.....I feel boredom coming on fast.

Me and the wife have been in hospital all week with our son. Looked out the window at 4am today, nothing, 6am ruddy snow everywhere but still not bad.

9pm now and half the hospital staff are bunked up in a big hall, they have cancelled all outpatient appointments for tomorrow and we couldn't go home even if we wanted to.

The Polish staff are highly amused as some of them left -19 degrees at home to come work in the UK.

I had an MRI on my knee at 7pm yesterday. I was making my way down to the hospital while on the phone to my dad. He got a phone call at that same moment from the hospital who wanted to speak to me. They couldn't pass the message onto my dad due to security issues so they rang me directly a few minutes later. I feared they would cancel but to my complete surprise they wanted me in!

I had a bit of an embarrassing moment when the nurses told me to get into a hospital gown!!!

Hope you feel better soon Gary, and not too bored. Take it easy.

I hope your son is doing OK Mike. I suppose there are worse places to be stranded by snow.

We didn't get much snow, but the force 8 easterly today was challenging, given the maximum temperature here was -6.
It is supposed to be +6 next Tuesday.

The trip to Morecambe is postponed, all the Trans Pennine roads seem to be in trouble.

I was positively fast tracked compared to your experience Mike. Hope all is going well now. Weather up in the North East still bitter cold but +1C at the moment.

Comments and well wishes appreciated. A Horatio "hernia" fix that needed sorting.

Best regards and stay warm & safe.

After a week driving the work's team around I finished last night for the next 10 days.

Off to Copenhagen for a big family get together and celebration mid week and hoping the weather lets us get there.

But just at the moment, it's 5 in the AM, I'm trying to figure out why my central heating is refusing to circulate hot water. the pump seems to be running and the boiler is working...

Think I'll go back to bed and try sorting it when better rested.
Cheers, HG

Went for a walk on the sea bed today. It is an extremely low tide so we didn't actually make it to the sea even after walking over a Km. The sea is frozen too, which is what I wanted to see, but I forgot to check the tide table. It was a bracing stroll.

If the sea is frozen at low tide, what happens when it comes back in?

Good question David. I assume the ice floats in atop unfrozen water. High tide was late last night and I don't have time this morning to go look at this mornings tide sadly.
I know that some of the ferries to the islands have been cancelled due to the ice and to the exceptional low tides - this afternoon's low tide will be -0.07metres, so below sea level!!!
I'm new to all this maritime stuff. Never lived on the coast before.

Emil, my Polish colleague at work told me out reminded him of home.

We were driven by to work in a blizzard at the time!

He added that it wasn't as cold though, -6 is warm apparently!
Cheers, HG

There were some Polish immigrants to UK, on TV, laughing at our amazement of -5 degrees - apparently in Poland -20 C is not unusual. Last night a Norwegian friend came to dinner and he said that even in southern Norway it had dropped to below -30 C and in the north of Norway it had been below -40 C. I didn't know that Europe ever got that cold. Thank goodness the thaw has come here in East Anglia - quite a nice day today.
