More Grey Heron
I think they're just overcropped - probably 1:1 or near! The heron was probably on the other side of the fjord  This amount of blur / noise is probably fine on the pixel level. Displaying images like this is fine for showing the performance of the sensor, but it's never going to be very sati...

George Kooymans & Frank Carillo
Glad you find it good the others will be better, have some really nice close up shots but not the whole song... one time the head came fully in the shot so i stop filming and later the card was full and i almost overheated the sensor with this song but it held out. yeah the heads... normally i've t...

First day's play with a Sigma 50mm Macro
I've had to go back to the pringles tube and onboard flash with these. The lens doesn't seem to let in as much light as the vivitar and the cheap ring lights I've got didin't seem to do anything with the Sigma. I picked up a Metz flash at a vide grenier the other week for €5, but it only works when ...

First day's play with a Sigma 50mm Macro
Hi Charlotte, rather than using the TC have you tried macro tubes? Because there is no extra glass between your lens and sensor you won't lose as much definition and sharpness, the down side is you have to get much closer to your subject. Try to get a set with contacts if you can. I also found a ch...

Cheating?
Rather than the inconsistent lighting, it's the apparent angle of view that makes the false sky obvious as a replacement. The view of the castle is clearly looking down, so I'd expect to see distant landscape at the base of the sky area. As far as Cheating goes, it can only be cheating if you try...

K20D modified for IR - first shots
Yesterday I received a K20D and proceeded with some trepidation to take it to bits and replace the IR-blocking filter on the sensor with an IR-passing one. It was dark by the time I put it together, but today after a quick tweak to the position of the sensor to suit the peculiar IR characteristics ...

K20D modified for IR - first shots
That may or not be true, but they certainly impress me. regards Bernard Thank you. They were supposed to be test shots, but I can't bring myself not to look for something worth taking  Incidentally, the extra pixels of the K20D allows much more cropping if necessary. This is a cropped...

K20D modified for IR - first shots
Not so sure about the astral projection part - although I see what you mean! I've written a couple of articles on IR which hopefully will be up for those of you with Plus membership to read before long. The process is as follows: 1. Take a fairly expensive camera body with a large number o...

K20D modified for IR - first shots
Not my most artistic, but they give an idea of what it is capable of. That may or not be true, but they certainly impress me. Yes, me too. It's this bit that made me laugh, at my own complete technical illiteracy on this subject... ...after a quick tweak to the position of the sensor to suit...

Himalaya/Kunlun Mountains in IR
For infinity focus for the 135mm you could establish where that is on the ring (via a series of test shots viewed at 100%) and then tape the focus ring in place with masking tape. Infinity is all you need from your office! Same for any other primes - once you've established a completely accurate ...

This land was ravaged by... IR version
I just love these IR photos you have been posting. As someone new to this technique, how do your modified camera photos compare with using an IR filter? As it happens I've written a couple of articles on the subject which will hopefully be put up soon for Plus members to see. In brief though the...

Little Owl at 1200mm
A treat and very difficult indeed given the depth of field available. I'm intrigued what the lens was if you got F8 with the two stop loss of the converter. Is that a 35mm 600mm or more with APSC sensor crop? Nothing like that in my modest camera bag, very jealous!

Tallinn, Estonia.
I really like the first and the 2nd photo. YOu have to clean your sensor before taking the fourth photo.

The Moon with Tokina AT-X 80-400mm
The full moon is very hard to do well - the absence of shadows means detail is lost, even if the image itself is sharp. This one would look a lot better smaller, IMO. What did you do for sharpening? a few days ago. It's the best I've achieved with the K-5 and the Pentax SMC-A 400mm F5.6, ...

Portchester Castle IR on the *ist DL
Yesterday I re-modified the Pentax *ist DL to get rid of some dust that was between the sensor and the low-pass filter, so today I set up the AF and did some real-world testing at Portchester Castle near Portsmouth in between heavy rain showers. It must be said that this isn't the preferred weath...

Portchester Castle IR on the *ist DL
I love your IR shots, but these aren't really very IR-ish, are they? Except for the 'crop circles' one. I also love it the way you say things like this: Yesterday I re-modified the Pentax *ist DL to get rid of some dust that was between the sensor and the low-pass filter  Are you a br...

Portchester Castle IR on the *ist DL
I love your IR shots, but these aren't really very IR-ish, are they? Except for the 'crop circles' one. No, these don't have the effects that IR gives to foliage and grass in sunshine, since for the most part it was very gloomy indeed! It did serve to bring out the drama of the clouds though, used...

Getting to know my FA*28-70 f/2.8
Long story short. Picked up a cosmetically mint copy of a FA*28-70 for less that £500. Previous owner had very honestly described it as having an "optical flaw preventing it taking critically sharp images". I took a punt and so far he was correct but at the same time I am being wowed by everything e...
