More Grey Heron

This is my third attempt at capturing Grey Heron residing by the Trondheimsfjord. Today I managed to find a Heron feeding near the shore and the light conditions were very good. Tokina 80-400mm and K20D. Comments and critique are welcome!

Very nice captures, but all of them look a bit blue. I think the white balance needs correcting, and also some noise reduction. They could do with a stop less exposure and a bit more contrast too. Are they large crops?

Thank you aliengrove! These images are all more or less 100% crops. I have tried to briefly adjust the first image in Lightroom according to your suggestions. I am not quite sure how to best set the white balance correction, but anyway I agree that these adjustments improve the photos.

Hi Bjorn - are these hand held or with a tripod/monopod?

I'd assume you aren't due to the slightly blurry nature of the shots. I think this is what you are missing - these shots have tremendous potential if they were sharper.

This shot was at 420mmn 1/180 sec ISO 200 with the K20D, so not a million miles away from your setup

In this example I didn't actually have a tripod/monopod I used the Bigma's lens hood resting on a very handy wall, but it gave me that essential extra stability. Whenever I truly hand held the Bigma, I never got really sharp shots (or they were rare). I actually find the Tamron 70-300 or DA 55-300 hand held and cropped gets better results. On a tripod/monopod though it's a different story.

If you managed to get a monopod I think you'll find it will transform your shots.

Hello Bjorn,
I see you've got your new Tokina. With my series 1, I found the best results were at an aperture of f11 or smaller. I always used aperture priority and set to f11 or 13 for photographing my kid's soccer matches.
Bright light and a large aperture can invite some purple fringing, as seen on the wings of the bird in photo 2.

^^ agree 100% on both the monopod and f11 with the tokina; I've also edged towards TAv on the K5 with 1/500+ and f10 set at 400mm to ensure minimal blur.

I think they're just overcropped - probably 1:1 or near! The heron was probably on the other side of the fjord

This amount of blur / noise is probably fine on the pixel level. Displaying images like this is fine for showing the performance of the sensor, but it's never going to be very satisfactory from an aesthetic point of view. And it's cheating!

If you read my second post above, you need not speculate about my cropping. All the images are cropped about 100%. The Heron is a very shy bird, it is difficult getting close enough. I also want to respond to your comment about my images presented above not being "satisfactory from an aesthetic point of view". I have studied quite a few very good bird photos, and many of them are heavily cropped - so what: If one were to develop your argument further, using a tele zoom like the Tokina 80-400mm would also considered be "cheating" then I guess...

Below is image number three straight from the camera, just rescaled to 800pixels for the forum. It was taken at 360mm.

I have not used a tripod/monopod, but I placed my LowePro bag on rocks on the shore, and rested the camera on the bag, thereby achieving at least some support. I will have to get a monopod in the future.

Smeggy: I am positively sure I saw the Heron smoking something before our photo session started

Thank you all for constructive C&C!

Best regards
Bjørn

Allowing for the heavy crops and flat lighting they are quite
good. There isn't much of a blue cast on my monitor?

Some sharpening and noise correction might help.

The lens should be OK between f/8 and f/11
