Some for Andrew
I'm pretty sure the K20D would win these days although the DR of BW film still beats a sensor unless you start using HDR-type techniques. A more interesting comparison would be a high-quality scan of a 5x4 neg v. the K20D... Sadly my finances don't run to a drum scanner! I don't shoot film beca...

Some for Andrew
I'm pretty sure the K20D would win these days although the DR of BW film still beats a sensor unless you start using HDR-type techniques. I'm not that surprised to hear you say that, Kris. I can remember the day, only a few years ago, when a friend of mine (richer and an early adopter) proudly s...

Heeeeeellllllllllllllllllp
Mannesty - I wasn't ignoring you - I had heard that Macro was 1:1 but it really didn't mean much. No worries, I can see you have been busy. Whilst I explained how to achieve it, I realised that I hadn't actually explained what 1:1 (Macro) magnification means. It's easier to explain in film te...

Room for improvement C&C
As Robert Capa once said: "If a picture doesn't work, you probably weren't close enough!" Your sensor needs some cleaning btw.

Boys' Village Part 2: General Views and Interiors
Glad you like it, Gareth, you're going to have so much fun next week when you visit...weather looks great on Monday and Tuesday in the west! Kris reckons a tripod would be a good idea: it'll slow you down and make you think, if nothing else, and allow you to use slow ASA speeds with that lovely s...

Dusty Wasp
I agree - top stuff. I like the third one best with the wasp head-on. Good focus on the head and he looks as if he's going to bite off his leg, but I guess he's getting on with cleaning himself... Regards Mat W

Film revisited at the ExCel centre
Well this film has sat in my sadly neglected MX for the last 18 months since I got my K20. I finally got round to developing it and scanning the neg. I'd forgotten how grainy FP4plus was. But i quite like it for these. I know they need cleaning up and some spot and scratch removal but I'd like a...

A Short Lesson in Composition
I like the second one but maybe the contrast could be upped a bit. Do I see some sensor muck have way down towards the left? Very nice indeed.

A Short Lesson in Composition
Do I see some sensor muck have way down towards the left? Very nice indeed. Thanks, Ken. I've always dreaded muck on the sensor. It's inevitable, I suppose, the number of times I change lenses and, of course, the extreme age of most of my lenses! It would show-up on a sky like this. How do ...

What a differance help makes
Really like the photo, I would, wouldn't I?! Just my type of subject. Personally I don't think the first picture needs a lot of sharpening! I quite like the subtle almost analogue look you get straight from the K10/K200's lovely sensor at times. Of course, it depends on the subject...and your te...

Left Luggage: Portmanteaux
Thank You Gary and Emma, I don't know what to say in response to your kind remarks. Due to circumstances beyond my control I've had time to work on my photography over the past few months (that's coming to an end soon when I go back to work, I'm glad to say!?!) I've also been encouraged, nudg...

Rainham Marshes
Emma - I think the light wasn't ideal and that they all need some help in PP to make them a bit more dynamic. Personally I think number 1 is too flat, number 2 is way too dark with no obvious benefits, number 3 if you like that sort of thing then OK, number 4 is the best of the group but do I se...

A few from Edinburgh
It is - and it's cleaning up well again - thanks to the fact that the tramway is now up and running - though long delayed and I understand much abbreviated. There are some lovely unspoilt corners there - one of these days I'll be fit to go for a good wander and indulge in a few more. I enjoy t...

S-M-C Takumar 28mm f/3.5
These go way beyon a series of test snaps Kris. What a wonderful way to cheer yourself up although, I'm bound to point out, that only women are supposed to respond to retail therapy: we just have to finance the treatment! I can't believe you got away unmolested with using the camera in St Pancras...

Another full moon
Hi Peter, Not having access to Picasa, I loaded the image(s) in PSE 8. Using Levels, if I drag the right lever almost all the way to the left, I see specles of noise. But at levels 0 (left) and 30 (right) the background is all black. (Hope this makes any sense to you). I will make a test imag...

Quality issue with TC
Hi, Talking from my perspective, I try to make the subject fill the view finder so as to get the maximum size image on the sensor, obviously by moving nearer or further away. However if I can not get any closer and using the same lens then I must use a converter to get the maximum size image on the...

Vlissingen Tritone
Thank you Alan. How much do you think I should crop then, the horizon is already pretty close to 1/3th. Please feel free to crop away on the photo. Alan about the badly processed negative, I did some major cloning around that part because my sensor almost looked like a Dalmatier :? Also clone...

A view from a different Paris tour!
I think there is a lot you can do to give it a bit more punch. A slight horizontal perspective adjustment will take away questions about the picture being straight. The Eifel Tower is but the angle towards the tower isn't. By raising the contrast on the sky scrapers you get some more clarity. A...

Body Comparison
I will re-shoot as the wind did not help. Sizes will be 800. PS is set to sRGB. Don't recall any warning messages. I didn't want to alter exposures. I am looking to see what each sensor/electronics offere from body to body. If anything, I may change to centre weighted rather than matrix metering....
