books/advice

Is it possible to lubricate or clean the action? Don't put any lubricant onto or in the lens what so ever :!: If any of it gets onto the elements or the aperture blades the lens will be history. You would probably need to get it professionally cleaned but i don't know if that would be economica...

marks on viewing screen

First thing, general advice is not to clean the focusing screen as this can cause damage to it. However, the good news is that any damage will not effect the final image in any way. The foam sounds a bit like the mirror cushioning to dampen the mirror and its noise when it flicks up on taking a ...

About to join all you MX owners...

The light seal kit turned up today but I'm off out for a bbq / birthday bash so no time to get cracking unfortunately. I did, however, make a start by stripping down the most obviously broken of the 4 bodies (the one where the meter had been de-soldered). As I went through it became obvious that t...

I love the idea of the limiteds but they just didn't seem to be suited to my DS. I really needed a quality standard zoom that wasn't too huge and it looked like the Nikon 16-85 was about the best available. I also wanted a small decent body and didn't like any of the current Pentax line up (feel and...

Great thread Hefty, I've just got hold of an MX and am looking forward to using it, after the task of cleaning etc.

Great thread Hefty, I've just got hold of an MX and am looking forward to using it, after the task of cleaning etc. Good luck with the cleaning. When you're getting the old foam seals out don't wear your best clothes (certainly nothing white!) as the little bits of corroded foam go everywhere and st...

Cheers for the advice, it does need new seals (already on order) but when I started cleaning my 'bargain' started to unravel!:cry:Seems a previous owner had glued the flash shoe together. It looked pretty when it disintegrated into dust, oh well, I'll try and track another down. apart from that so f...

110 Film Cartridge Availability and Processing

Mongoose, Thanks for the encouraging news! I've found an eBay site in France which is TOTALLY dedicated to Pentax Auto 110. There seems to be a fierce following for these little guys! I think there was an earlier thread on this forum wishing for a digital sensor. That would sure have a m...

Destroying cameras

I have done something quite stupid. I have an old beautiful Pentax SLR camera and some of the foam seal in front of the ground glass is perishing. I tried pulling the loose bits of this seal away and they fell on the ground glass, stupidly I tried cleaning it and have rubbed the foam into the ground...

Destroying cameras

In an ideal world - as you've discovered - you shouldn't let the old foam come into contact with the focussing screen. However, now it's done you have nothing to lose in cleaning the screen. I use lighter fluid and dab it on with a cotton bud. Rub the screen very, very gently with the bud and w...

Destroying cameras

Old and rotten light seal foam is one of the hardest things to remove from any surface (it seems to take on the consistency of permanent marker ink the second it touches anything you don't want it to touch) - the trick is to keep persevering. Lighter fluid will do the trick eventually but don't be ...

Cloudy lens

It's a nice lens but I'd wait for a better example. The cost of professional cleaning could be almost as much as the cost of the lens.

which battery

I found rechargeable (NiMH 1.2V) batteries simply - most likely due to the voltage difference - would not operate the winder motor strongly enough to advance it at all, and were quite useless. I popped in nearly-new alkaline 1.5V cells, and it worked perfectly (and is still doing so, on the same bat...

What scanner?

I've not used my Coolscan V for anything other than slides. I find it takes about 2 hours to preview, scan and save the files from a roll of 36. If you can get a work flow organised, you can clean each slide with a blower to get rid of the dust and clag as the previous one is previewing, and load ...

Pentax camera similar or the same as a rangefinder

* By the way, if I could only have one lens on a 35mm camera it would almost certainly be the 43mm - it's extraordinarily good! :D Indeed. In my view, it would constitute one real advantage to having a 135-format sensor on digital. It's a jewel - and perfect for any of the camera bodies mentioned....

Bargain

Perhaps the seller will buy a sensor cleaning kit with the proceeds. The sensor of the camera he took those images with is filthy. Lovely bit of kit though.

Perhaps the seller will buy a sensor cleaning kit with the proceeds. The sensor of the camera he took those images with is filthy. He could also have taken the time to fit the body cap with the Pentax logo the right way up:D Presentation is very important when selling. Nice bit of kit though, a...

mz-m and lens questions

Using the 18-55mm on a film camera isn't such as good idea as it is only designed to cover the area of the APS-C sized sensor. At wider apertures and wider angles you could expect some vignetting. The lack of an aperture ring would also be very restrictive, although Program and Shutter Priority mode...
