Buying an Old Manual Focus SLR

ME Super would get my vote, try your local charity shops or antique type centres as there are always some tucked away there! I got one for a fiver once, bit of a leaky battery mess, but it cleaned up and hey presto took lovely shots.

NEW TO FILM.

As for the P series, I like my P30 but would suggest either a P30n or t, they seem happier with M series lenses. Early P30 models don't always want to work with the older lenses. The original P30 only had Program & Manual exposure modes, the n & T added Aperture Priority. Using a lens without an '...

NEW TO FILM.

Hi Deryn, As far as the lenses go, traditionally the 28mm is ideal for landscapes and the 50mm is a great all-round, fast lens. Portrait lenses are traditionally longer than 50mm (75mm+) because shooting too close to the subject (i.e. frame filling with a 50mm) doesn't look too flattering. These ...

NEW TO FILM.

I experimented with an MZ-10 and the 18-55 a few years back. I concur, after 24mm results were very acceptable. With the MZ-10 having body aperture control it all worked great.

p30n ISO control?

Hi Deryn, For info on DX coding: Yes the roll of film is the canister (or cassette). The left hand side of the camera back will have a row of electrical contacts. These are used to read the DX code - black/silver pattern of squares on the canister (almost all boxed film will have one). Th...

'wind on' help?

Don't forget to rewind the film into the cassette before opening the back :) Not that I've ever done it of course  but if you do, snapping the back closed immediately minimises the damage.

Pentax SFX

I am currently sorting out my old film cameras,(Sold an MX here last week), when my wife informed me she taking some items to the local charity shop,on closer inspection I found she had put in the bag my old Pentax SFX Camera and lens, Her thinking was it was to modern to be a classic and not worth ...

Pentax SFX

The SFXn was my first proper camera bought brand new from Jessops with Sigma 28-50 and 50-210mm lenses. I only wish now I learned how to use it. Sold on ebay :( Have loads of holiday snaps (slides) which I must sort out some day :) I had the same combination which I believe was actually 28-70 and 7...

Pentax SFX

I put mine on ebay a few years ago with a £5 starting bid and got no takers, so now it lives in the back of my cupboard and very occasionally gets a roll put through it when I want a decent camera with me but am not prepared to risk my DSLR. I quite like my old SFX, it's ugly as sin but hard as n...

MX self timer has stopped working

I recently acquired a MX from a well-known online auction site. This evening, my 8-year-old daughter was intrigued and I let her play with it for a few minutes. When I got my hands back on the camera, I found that the self-timer lever was loose. Pressing the little button doesn't activate the count-...

Expired film

I've just had my expired/old 120 rolls back from Peak Imaging. This was Fuji Provia 100 (probably Professional) and dating back to being exposed in 2005 ish and Provia 100 Pro expired 2009 shot recently. Storage was not temperature controlled in a cupboard. All were exposed at ISO 100 and as far as ...

Expired film

I've had some more old 120 roll films back, this time Kodak Porta 160NC & Kodak T400CN (C41 B&W), both shot in 2003 and processed/scanned by Peak Imaging. I had to boost the contrast of the T400CN scans, but surprised to get as much I did out of it. This time shot on a Mamiya 645: John.

Exposure compensation?

Hi all, I took some portrait shots today in quite bright sunlight. On my digital I was able to adjust the exposure compensation and managed to get some decent face exposures despite strong back lighting. But when it comes to the P30n I was at a bit of a loss as what to do? In the manual it says y...

Exposure compensation?

Ya thats right the p30n only has centre spot if i remember so centre focus and lock ae on the face and the fzce should be perfectly exposed, the sky however and maybe the background will be blown out.

Exposure compensation?

The P30n is a manual focus camera, so focusing is done by eye, using the central split image if required. The idea Deryn is to focus on the face but for the exposure point the camera at something that won't be fooled by the bright sky. Then use AE lock, recompose and shoot.

Exposure compensation?

Thanks guys. even with the digital yesterday face pics were still a little underexposed with a little exposure compensation added. Shooting in RAW might have helped. I also forgot how annoying it can be when the subject moves just as you press the shutter on a film camera. Every time this hap...

Value ? Spotmatic F

Thanks John , went back yesterday to take a closer look ,the 55mm has a bad case of fungus and the camera was in poor condition as well. though the zoom lens seemed ok , it was a secondhand goods shop (not a charity)and the propietor wasn`t prepared to budge on price so left it at that. regards, ti...

Value ? Spotmatic F

I think the days of bargain Spotmatics with lenses on Ebay are now long gone. Most people have realised they can sell the lenses to Canon/NEX owners for much more than the selling the camera and a lens. Quite why they want 40yr old manual focus lenses so badly is a mystery to me. There are loads ...

Buying SLR checklist.

Worn case and very good body would suggest amateur use and the opposite might indicate professional use. Take the lens off and carefully examine it from back and front in good light looking for fine lines of fungus. Check the iris opens and closes snappily and there are no traces of oil on the blade...

Z-1p - Thoughts?

Personally, I think you should have been a little more patient and held out for a Z-1p! johnha has told you just about all you need to know about the camera but it was the last hardware I used before turning digital and I loved it, but then I've said that about every Pentax I've owned and used sinc...
