Buying an Old Manual Focus SLR
For that price you probably won't get an MX (or anything of similar age) that has new seals and has recently been serviced. Seals will be around 30 quid more and a full service around 65. You should take this into account when buying an old manual SLR, though you could get lucky. The MX is nice...

Buying an Old Manual Focus SLR
Hi, the three you mention are probably the best options to consider based on availability. Personally I'd also consider a P50 purely because it has an AE lock. Using a centre-weighted only camera in aperture priority having got used to Hyper modes fills me with dread - I haven't a clue how I used to...

I too think you'll struggle to get an MX in decent nick for £30. With patience you may pick up a K1000 on ebay though...

ME super was a good camera and they come up cheap because there were so many sold. There must be loads of them that have had very little use and will be working fine, so long as the batteries haven't leaked. Light seals are not a difficult diy job.

Thanks all very much for replies... having had a good nose around on ebay over the past few days, there's clearly plenty of choice out there... still tending towards the ME Super I think, but might be patient and see if I get lucky with an under the radar MX... there seem to be more out there than I...

If you're set on an MX just keep looking. I managed to get one from ebay with a 50mm f1.7 lens for less than your £30 target. But it took a lot of looking!

A 'Prog-A' might come up for around the same price as an ME-Super... Better camera... Fugly-butters in comparrison to the ME but uses the 'A' setting... I'd look out for a Super A, because the shutter speed is better, and you also have a choice of Aperture or Shutter priority! Wish I had kept min...

I think the only manual Pentax SLR you will get in good condition and without any work needed will be a P30 or P30N. The difference is that the "N" has aperture priority and a better grip. You could probably get a perfectly good one for £15, that's the max I spent on my three P30s... They're ve...

It appears that everyone seems to have their favourites. The Super-A is very good (I've had three and sold one, still have two - only one still works). It's manual mode feels clunky to me, which wouldn't be an issue if it had an AE lock. Oh and wearing a cap throws the viewfinder LCDs into darkness....
