Moss Spores Capsule...

Stupendous! Composition, lighting. focus, transition to OOF areas, all spot on. Ultra-macro at its best :D. Did you go hunting for a spore capsule in just the right state or was it luck? (I know, I know, that's an unfair question...) Steve

It's That Time of Year

I remember back in the day, when the world was new and film was king being told that bluebells were one of the most difficult things to photograph.

A trip to The Shed

An interesting and varied set that only serves to increase my admiration for the enthusiasts who take on these huge projects. And a set that brings back holiday memories of a wet day with wet wife, wet little kids and wet dog steaming by the coal fire in a waiting room while waiting for the return t...

Seed in a cobweb.

- don't ask what I've been on! :) OK, so I won't ask. But whatever it is, I'll have some if it's affordable, legal and helps you to see things like that . Well worth pressing the shutter button. If you don't experiment, you don't develop as a photographer. The image might be stronger if ...

Blooming heck!

Tis challenging taking close up of flowers. I tried focus stacking in Affinity photo2. Used k-3iii with 16-85mm lens and LED ring flash attached and a tripod (The whisky method - drinking a tot or two then focussing manually and hand held and taking photos as you sway back and forth didn't seem t...

Blooming heck!

Thanks. I have a focus rail thingy BUT I must say that the ability to dab on the rear screen to set a focus point is a fantatsic piece of new technology and very helpful when trying to do focus stacking on a still subject

Blooming heck!

Nice! But beware - focus stacking is a slippery slope and you've put a foot on it. Soon, you'll be wanting to fill the frame with a single petal, then a tiny flower, then a stamen from a tiny flower.... Steve

The first of many...

On Monday night I took myself to a place called Warslow Moor, in the Peak District. I was armed with a K5ii, my new 70mm ED f6 420mm Refractor Telescope, 0.8 Field Flatter/Reducer and my telescope mount. More crucially I had my recently acCquired guide camera, guidescope, and a laptop loaded with...

More Flowery Shots.

Three quite different shots. The first works well for me, flower and background well separated by both colour and in/out of focus. Definitely my favourite :). The second would work for me if the background were more blurred (like the first). The last has promise but to my mind would benefit from eit...

More Flowery Shots.

"EXIF data says that all three were taken at f11. Was that deliberate?" Yes it was, bit of an experiment, so I'm glad you noticed, I had taken the same photo the day or two earlier at f2.8, both instances using manual focus and F. peaking. However the f2.8 ones, several of, were not to my liking h...

More Flowery Shots.

Interesting. I've had a look at the apertures chosen for my recent photos of small(-ish) flowers (geranium etc.). They were mostly f5.6 or f8, when the intention was for the entire flower to be pretty much in focus, mostly f2.8 or f4 when I wanted only a specific part of the flower to be in focus. T...

What else is a 1.2 for...

Thanks for all the kind comments! This lens is a beautiful piece of optical and mechanical engineering, the focus is buttery smooth and construction is solid and gives confidence. It is also so difficult to nail the focus with - Live View does help but the switch between full frame composing and zo...

reds over malvern

Nice 8) The first I knew was when I heard the engine roar approaching - I sat with a glass in hand in the back garden and toasted them as they flew directly overhead :P

When Red Competes With Green

Thanks I'm guessing they are at f2.8 ? Nope. First at f4, second at f5.6. The way each image changes as the f-stop changes is subtle but noticeable. Smaller aperture puts more of the bud in focus but also makes the background less blurred. I went for the one I preferred in each case. Other eyes/bra...

Belated bluebell woods

A lovely set which demonstrates a moment in time for a area of woodland. I notice only too well that even a week can completely change the character of a space, whether it be out in the wild or in our gardens. The dry weather of the last 3 weeks has completely transformed our wild back garden fr...

water problems

Thanks for positive comments and the constructive criticism fellow Pentaxians. Your thoughts have helped me think about what to do next time. Swarf: yep. I need to go back and try again. Jonathan-Mac: The river flows through peat areas - hence the brackenish colours of the water.
